Speakers won't work

I have just upgraded my machine to Windows 2000 it was previously Windows 98. After installing W2K my speakers would not work. I have no sound coming through them and there is no icon down by the clock. If you have any ideas please share them it would be a great help. My kids like to play music so it would be nice to have fixed. Thanks!

My System

here's the best answer i can give....

download everest home edition, and give it a run to see if it can see your sound card, and then you know what driver to get.

Do you hear system sounds [eg.when you log on and shut down etc, coming from the computer].In contol panel/sounds and audio/is your soundcard listed. Check to see if the volume has been muted [click the audio tab, then volume in the playback section.] Sometimes after reinstalling windows the audio drivers seem to get wiped out....so you should try to update them [click on the hardware tab, highlight the audio driver, then properties/driver tab/update driver. If that doesn't work you can try to get them at your motherboards website. You'll need the model number etc. [Edit; As WaltSide already said..]

Re

Ok, I went to the control panel and looked for my speakers and they were not there and almost every option was greyed out. There is no driver to update. So you have told me that I need to get the driver name how do I do that?
PS. Would getting a new set of speakers help or fix the problem?

No, the speakers are most probably ok. You need the make and model number of your motherboard. You can d/l a programme called Everest Home Edition from www.lavalys.com [click on the products tab]and find this information.[it's free for personal use] You can then go to the motherboards website [google it] where you should be able to get the drivers. Good luck.

seriously, everest should do it.

i thought so 4 posts ago, and i still think so now.

of course you wont find your speakers in the device manager, speakers are invisible to the device manager.

you should see a sound card in there, but will be listed as unknown till after you figure out which card it is, download a driver, and install it.

also, while using everest to view the summary of your machine you can right click on the device, and go straight to the download. (99% of the time this works.)
