I have an HP Omnibook 6000 with Windows 2000 Professional (upgraded from the Win 98 that came loaded on it). As you can see from my username, I don't know squat and am hoping I can get some guidance in Plain English because, well, I'm old and don't have time to catch up. The notebook boots VERY slow. I upgraded to 512 RAM, there is very little or no data on the notebook (most of my data is on my PC). I've tried everything I know how to do, running all the clean up and maintenance programs I have available and nothing seems to work. Norton System Works & Anti Virus are on the laptop and I understand that is problematic to some as well. I know zip about partitions, FAT 32 or NTFS, etc. I just bought a full version of Win 2000 Pro to do a clean install but when I read the instructions I start to panic. Can anyone guide me through this? I know I will need to reinstall other software programs, etc. That's not a big deal. I just want to start clean to see if that fixes the problem. The depth of my understanding of DOS, FDISK and boot disks is pretty pathetic too, so if you tell me, pretend you're speaking to someone that is mentally challenged. Thank you :-))))

You should be able to boot to the Windows 2000 cd. During the setup process it will ask you where (which drive/partition) you want to install Windows 2000. At that step you can delete all partitions and choose to install it to the unpartitioned space. It will also prompt you to format at that time, format it NTFS and you should be good to go.

I'd first check and make sure you have all the drivers for the hardware on the Omnibook for 2K. You'll need them handy when you get to the end of the installation.

I thought I was doing a great job with the clean install and was home free and then something very weird happened. And this was after I successfully installed the full version and even re-installed Office, etc. (or so I thought). When I was going to connect to the internet again, I realized that I had to pick the closest choice to my modem on the list (because it no longer appeared on the modem list) and I needed to download the driver for it (which I did on my PC). When I tried to log back on, I got a quick string of asterisks across the password field and then a loud persistent set of dings like an alarm. There was nothing I could do except shut the laptop down. I tried to reboot several times with the exact same result. Did I lock something accidentally and if so, how do I unlock. I clicked on the unlock button (at CTRL-ALT-DEL) but that didn't work. I did notice that when I tried to reboot, I got a black screen with Windows 2000 selection choice twice asking me which I wanted to boot to. I thought I had deleted the partition when I installed it. Do I just try a clean install again to resolve this? And when it asks me if I want to delete the partition, do I just delete one or both? My laptop is about to fly out the window.

Had an addendum to above post or actually a question: If I use the original HP Omnibook 6000 Recovery CD (which came loaded with Windows 98), [and I have both Win 2000 Pro Upgrade and also a full version of same], can I pop the full version CD in and just install it over the 98 without doing a "clean" install? The reason I'm asking this is because I'm wondering if the problem I posted above would be resolved through the Recovery CD and since my support on the Win 2000 upgrade has expired, I'd like to register the full version for continued tech support. Would that work? Don't forget, I'm old and have no clue what I'm talking about, so bear with me
