CD/ROM will play DVD's but not regular CD's

Hi, I have a Toshiba Laptop w/ Windows 2000 and a cd/dvd combo drive. The drive will read and play DVD movies but will not play/read regular data or audio CD's. Everytime I insert a non-dvd disk, it gives me a message stating that the media is not formatted.

I previously had a similar problem with another Windows 2000 laptop. In that case I had an XP DVD and went ahead with the upgrade and that solved the problem. However, in this case the upgrade is not an option.

Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

have you tried un-installing the driver and updating it with a new one ?
