HDD Power-offs at win2k boot

Hi,

I have the following problem:
At Win2k startup the HDD sometimes turns off and on again (a weird click, then it starts spinning again). If this happens, the full boot-up takes several minutes and the system becomes very slow e.g., the mouse moves very dashed.

ASUS A7V333 motherboard - AMD2000+ processor - Win2K and and BIOS are up to date.

On this machine Linux boots well, the Windows partitions can be read byte by byte (with dd) without errors, so I don't think this is a hardware issue. I have also tried to remove all IDE drives but the active HDD - the problem remained.

Do You have any idea?

Hi,

For what it is worth....back up that hard drive immediately. While it may not be, it is quite likely that you have a drive that is about to kick over and quit. It might also be a bug of some kind, but we will explore that later.

That being said, one might want to make sure your ribbon and power cables are secure on the drive, try another ribbon cable while you have the case open since they have been known to die.
