system/config/system file corrupt or missing in windows 2000 pro? please help?

I have this windows 2000 professional 1-2CPU edition in my computer .. I don’t know what this 1-2CPU means but I just found it on product key sticker on side panel. I am running a CNC software which unfortunately runs only on this OS. I have system/config/system file corrupt or missing. Its just asking me to repair this file by choosing ‘r’ option after entering the original windows 2000 professional disk but unfortunately I don’t have this disk with me now. Do I have any other option I can try? Can I use windows XP professional with SP1 instead of this. Please help me its very important for me.
Thanks in advance

What is the exact error message you're receiving?

On the very first screen Setup stops on, you should have 3 options:
  • To set up Windows 2000 now, press ENTER.
  • To repair a Windows 2000 installation, press R.
  • To quit Setup without installing Windows 2000, press F3.
Press R on this screen
The next screen should list two options:
  • To repair a Windows 2000 installation by using the recovery console, press C.
  • To repair a Windows 2000 installation by using the emergency repair process, press R.
Press C on this screen to get to the Recovery Console.

Then follow the steps to Restore a Backup of the System Hive from this article:
Error Message: Windows Could Not Start Because the Following File Is Missing or Corrupt: \Winnt\System32\Config\Systemced

The Recovery Console on a WinXP CD or from the XP Setup Floppies can also be used.

The 1-2 CPU item on the sticker just means the Win2K license is good on systems with either 1 or 2 Processors
