Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
I have a Gateway Solo 5300 Laptop run Windows 2000 SP1. This laptop has not been in use for several years and is likely behind on tons of updates. I connected an Ethernet cable to it hoping it would connect to my network. I could then download updates.
The problem is that the Ethernet port does not seem to work. Maybe there is some setting in Win 2000 that turns the port on? I've never used Win 2000...Only XP and Vista. All help is appreciated. |

Re: Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
Is the driver for it installed? Check in device manager. Start, run, devmgmt.msc
You shouldn't see any yellow exclamation marks, and the network card will be listed under network adapters. Also how is your network set up? What kind of connection do you have? Some routers require you set the IP address on your home network manually, others will assign it automatically. Or do you use some other way of connecting like PPPoE DSL (requires username and password)? |

Re: Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
I do not see "Network Adapters" listed under the Device Manager at all. I expanded all the plus symbols and did not see it there either. Am I missing something? I see "PCMCIA Adapters" but that's it as far as networking goes.

Re: Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
Well I looked on the gateway site
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...olo+5300&st=kw The only thing that seems to match is the Xircom Mini-PCI combo card driver, so I'd get that and try installing it. P.S: Get SP4, then the post-SP4 rollup update as soon as you get connected to the web. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-297BD6CA33A0 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...B-BF28B324C662 and also IE6 SP1. |

Re: Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
I downloaded the driver but I see no way to install it. There is an "Install" icon within the subfolders but it does not do anything when clicked. The "Readme" is no help either.
What should I do? |

Re: Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
Normally you can do a manual install of the hardware by going to the control panel and using the ADD HARDWARE icon. You'll select the type of hardware and manually select the driver that you downloaded. If the device hardware is found on your computer it should start working providing you do have the correct driver. The other option to look at would be in device manager. You might have some question marks under OTHER which could be the network adapter. If there is, you can tell it up update the driver and select the driver location that you put the drivers you downloaded.

Re: Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
When you ran the file, it should have extracted to C:\cabs\7511874b1. Go to device manager, look for one of the devices that's missing drivers (should have yellow exclamation mark - usually network cards will be named ethernet or network or something like that. Double-click it, go to the drivers tab, click update driver, then select this location manually
C:\cabs\7511874b1\LAN\14419_PC99 This should work. If not, pop a floppy disk in the drive, and run MAKEW2K.BAT then when doing manual installation of the driver, point it to the floppy drive. If you want to install the modem drivers, go to this folder C:\cabs\7511874b1\Modem\WIN2K and run setup |

Re: Win 2000 - Laptop Ethernet Port Not Working
I was on XP when I typed that. Let me retype that more accurately now that I'm back on 2000.
Go here http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=247279678 click on the red "Download Now" Run the file that you downloaded from gateway (should be named 7511874b1.exe) By default the files should be extracted to C:\cabs\7511874b1 Start device manager (start, run, then type devmgmt.msc) It should look like this: http://www.intel.com/support/pix/mot...device_mgr.gif The devices missing drivers will look like the stuff with the yellow exclamation marks under other devices. One of them should be named ethernet controller (maybe - maybe it'll be named network something, or something else, you'll have to use your intuition, and maybe do trial and error). Double-click it. Go to the driver tab. Click on update driver. Pick search for a suitable driver. Check the box specify a location. Then browse and point to C:\cabs\7511874b1\LAN\14419_PC99 Probably select OEMSETUP.INF (if it doesn't work, just pick another). Then it should install. If that doesn't work. Go to C:\cabs\7511874b1\LAN\14419_PC99 and run the file named MAKEW2K.BAT (you'll need a floppy disk). Then go back to device manager as above, but at the step where you pick a location, pick install from a floppy instead of specify location. |
