Computer is sick. Dying.. please help
I have windows 2000 pro
I have been having problems for some time with virtual memory notes popping up. now it is getting worse. I had a lot of pictures on here and doc files but still a good portion of my hard drive is free. Can anyone help me to see what is going on in the OS. I am not knowledgable to go beyond cleaning out cookies or general malware I would love to get this old friend working again properly. I have not seen my home page load for weeks now. All that loads is this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/int...r/default.aspx I have comcast net. I looked and my home page is absolutely set. Don't know how this can keep happening. Any help would be apreciated. Thank You , carol

Re: Computer is sick. Dying.. please help
errors about virtual memory usually means you're short on it.
How much RAM do you have? (if you don't know, right-click my computer and look at properties) How much hard disk space do you have and how much do you have left? Open My Computer, and click on C: The preview pane should tell you both. How much memory are you using? Right-click your taskbar and pick task manager. Look under the performance tab. While you're at it, report CPU usage too. Finally how big did you set your pagefile? Right-click My Computer, go to properties. There should be an advanced tab somewhere (I'm on XP, so I don't recall if it's the same). Perhaps a change button for virtual memory or page file. Try increasing it. Remember to click on SET or the changes won't be applied. As for the homepage problem, what version of Internet Explorer are you using? The latest for Windows 2000 is IE 6 SP1. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en If it still doesn't work, try firefox 3.5 http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html |

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
Advanced tab uncheck Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates Seems the update check isn't smart enough to verify if the update is compatible with the OS you are running.

Re: Computer is sick. Dying.. please help
MY problem: Whatever I do to increase C-drive space- omitting virtually all temporary files/history, etc, together with leaving only a few very essential programs NOT deleted on 'add/delete' options......
my 'empty space' when trying to defrag stays at 2-3 percent. SHOULD I throw this 10-year old MSN Pc out from the balcony? Please, advise. Thanks. |

Re: Computer is sick. Dying.. please help
You really should have started a new thread as your issue has nothing to do with this one, and this also isn't the Windows ME forum.
If you've deleted all the temp files and programs, and only have 2-3% free space, time to copy your files you don't use often to CD/DVD, or get a 2nd/larger hard drive. Might also run Scandisk, to see if space is being allocated that shouldn't be. Double click My Computer Right click the drive Click Properties Click Tools tab Click Check Now. I would leave the Automatically Fix Errors unchecked and run it to see if there are errors. Some errors on FAT32 systems can result in loss of data, so always a good idea to have anything important backed up before letting it fix errors.
