Can't connect to the internet: ethernet adapter issue (or so it seems)?

Hello,

I use Win2000Pro and connect to the internet via Verizon DSL, Westell7500 modem/router and Netgear powerline. Never had any connection problem that would not fix itself with a computer and/or modem/router reboot.

A couple of days ago I had to reboot a few times both computer and modem/router for the "no network connection" icon to disappear but I haven't been able to reconnect to the internet. My wife has a Mac that connects wireless to the Westell so the DSL service does not seem to be the issue.

Verizon DSL customer service says it must be a problem with the ethernet adapter because when commanding "ipconfig" the IP address shown is not the Verizon IP (192.168.1.1). However, the control panel function shows my ethernet adapter working properly.

Following Verizon's suggestion (they don't support Win2000 anymore) I downloaded driver with the Mac from the internet (I can't find the original disk source so I went to http://www.viaarena.com/displaydrive...0&SubCatID=147) and copied onto my desktop.

The read me note of the driver says that the XP folder also contains the driver for Win2000. I then used the control panel functions to desinstall the driver and reinstall using the new driver. At some point I'm asked for file fetnd5b.sys which apparently cannot be found in the driver. From google searches it seems that this file is an XP file. Should I download it (any recommended site?) and proceed even though I'm not on XP?

Thank you.

Re: Can't connect to the internet: ethernet adapter issue (or so it seems)?

Do you know if your connection is PPPoE (you have to type in a password and username every time to get on the net) or PPPoA (always on internet, your computer has its own private IP address, likely 192.168.0.1, on a private home network, and the modem is a router connects you to the net).
If you have PPPoE you'll need PPPoE drivers (those aren't built-in 2000 like in XP). I used RASPPPoE (which is freeware).
If you have the other one, check the properties for your local area connection. TCP/IP should be checked. If the router gives out IP addresses automatically (DHCP), then you leave the setting to automatic, otherwise, type in an IP address manually.

From your description it's PPPoA. I'll try your advice when at home. Thank you.
