Laptop BIOS password

When I bought a Dell laptop XPS with Vista last year I felt freer to experiment with my Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop from Sept, 2001, with Windows 2000.
I used BIOS password. But then I forgot the password. For about $35,-, Dell, Denmark, said they would send to their German center and have them generate a new BIOS password. I got the new password emailed and it opened the notebook. But when I go into BIOS and want to alter the password they sent, I get the message that I must key in the former password. Using the password Dell sent me doesn’t function. Wrong Password, it says? It seems that BIOS is expecting the password which I have forgotten. Dell doesn’t understand this problem, they say, and don’t know what to do. They even have the temerity to suggest that Inspiron 8000 is antiquated, although its functioned fined since 9/11.
The Dell warranty ran out 6 years ago. Any suggestions what can be done?
