does anyone know how to fix this
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these. 19,517,424 KB total disk space. 549,680 KB in 963 hidden files. 62,448 KB in 3,799 folders. 8,615,904 KB in 26,771 files. 32 KB in bad sectors. 10,289,312 KB are available. 16,384 bytes in each allocation unit. 1,219,839 total allocation units on disk. 643,082 allocation units available on disk. C:\>chkdsk/f The type of the file system is FAT32. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) y This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts. I have no idea what is going on here but i cannot download programs.... and it tells me to disk check it but then disk check tells me to fix it and this comes up? |

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
Well you can't chkdsk a drive while it's in use (namely your C: drive). Just type Y, and then reboot and it'll check it.
If you want to see the results after reboot, go to your event viewer (control panel, administrative tools, even viewer) and look for an event named winlogon and double-click it. |

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
What do you mean it doesn't let you?
When you type chkdsk /f, do you say yes when prompted to do it at the next reboot? Then did you reboot? And did chkdsk run prior to getting into windows? |

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
I looked up the factory specs on this model, and it may explain why Windows 2000 is on a FAT32 drive.
Originally shipped with Windows 98 SE. 12 GB hard drive and 128 MB RAM. P3 700 MHz CPU. The HD was apparently wiped at some point. Formatted back to FAT32 and Win 2K installed. Quote:

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
Windows Update does work with Windows 2000! I know because I use it myself!
And it doesn't matter what file system the C: drive is. If your O/S is running, you can't run chkdsk on it. You have to press Y and reboot. Only diff between NTFS and FAT32 is at the end of chkdsk, NTFS reboots again, whereas FAT32 will continue loading the OS. To force Windows Update to run, go to automatic updates in control panel, set it to off, then back to one of the on's again. The other way, more direct, is to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com |

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
Extended support for Windows 2000 SP4 ends on 7/13/2010. So not quite gone yet.

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
I have tried updating from the site but it says theres an error or something and that it cant do it. And it does disk check in startup but it doesnt fix anything. And its a refurbished computer so Im assuming it was wiped clean and reinstalled. If I formatted the drive and installed windows xp on here would that work? And yes I have tried the /f command and it just checks it but doesnt fix it. And my computer still wont let me download things and a few programs still show the generic symbol. Im really trying hard not to take it in to the experts to fix it. I dont have any money at this point and they tend to charge a lot for whatever they do. I took a few computer classes but im not THAT good lol and my grandpa works for IBM and fixes computers but I dont think he knows how to fix laptops. I am completely lost at what to do. I think maybe a few programs/files got deleted to make this computer run smoothly. Still I cant download Windows XP on boot or on the desktop screen. *shrugs* Sorry have not been on in a while. A lot to explain.

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
Ok try and run this command here:
chkdsk /f /r This command will repair and fix the files. Tip: After completing the checkdisk - upon reboot run disk defragment Then update your antivirus before doing anything else.

Re: does anyone know how to fix this
Yeah I did that but Im getting application errors as well.
The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000005). Click OK to terminate the application. I dont know what thats about but it will randomly pop up every once in a while. Actually a lot more frequently now. Update.exe is one that pops up a lot as well saying that it has to terminate the program. Goodness this computer is a problem. Uhm. Lets see. I tried putting in a cd for my webcam and it did that application error too. So I think maybe it might be my download wizard but i dont really know. Any ideas? Sorry guys Im a pain in the butt. |
