Re: win2k after HD replacement

I just went to the MS site to look for a fix for this monitor problem. There isn't even a monitor in device manager! anyway I saw that Bing is an MS product I suppose if I had better resolution on the oother computer I would have been able to see that.
I still don't like it because it hijacks my searches in google and I think it is the bug that is shutting IE down as I try to find solutions for my computer.

I'm starting to think the copy of W2K I have is corrupt.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

It just occured to me that I should mention that I selected NTFS when I reformatted. I hope I chose correctly. It was newer?

Re: win2k after HD replacement

I'm not sure if monitor drivers would help, but search for them if that's what's needed.

The reason why I suggest going on the web close to the end, and making the first stop windowsupdate is because your system is very vulnerable in that brief time span before it's completely patched. In particular to worms or buffer overflow attacks (esp since you don't have a firewall). You may very well have been unknowingly infected.
If you don't mind it too much, start from scratch again. Sometimes cleaning an infected system is more work than starting from scratch.

Usually disk diagnostics run better from DOS (a bootable floppy or a bootable CD), but if you want to use the Windows version you're free to.

Here's my IE6SP1: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ARYGRP48
Downloaded it from MS in 2002... maybe appended a tiny bit in 2007.

Also a recap of where you are... like what you've installed, what's working, what's not, and what problems you still have - would be helpful.
Screenshot of device manager would be good too.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

GOOD Morning Blah789,
Coffee just kicked in.
Well I ended up doing just that but not because of your good advice.
I tinkered and tinkered until I had a blue screen again. Then W2K wouldn't load after that so I went back to install win98 then when it came time to install W2K on top I chose not to format the drive again ( reformatted for some reason I cannot explain when I did this yesterday) this time and it seems to have helped.
Then I went to your original instructions that got me online and did them one at a time with restart in between. IE6 loaded properly first time! (?) I skipped the hive thingy and tweeker thingy then I updated. I was able to do all of this uploading from the computer in question after I installed SP4 on the desktop via flash.
Prior to starting the uploading and downloading, I went ahead and installed my paid version of AVG onto the machine, just in case, and this too seems to have helped. After I got everything installed and S&D onboard I deleted it and installed AVG free. After all I am giving it away.

Then the only issues left is the default VGA setting for display and haviong to choose windows or windows 2000 professional at some point during startup. Choosing windows makes it start win98 then it bluescreens. hence the looking for a OEM copy of W2K to reinstall.
I was able to find several postings online about this display problem and it seems it is a W2K specific issue so after I do some me stuff today pay bills, wash, shave, (I've been at this thing for three solid days!) I will begin again to search for a solution. I have put out feelers on CL for an uncorrupted OEM copy of W2K. We'll see, I wasn't very successful with this in the past. I ended up trading 2gigs of Laptop ram for the copy I have! I have a license not a copy of the software. It is from an Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher and they wanted another $60 to reinstall it after the HD they put in it blew up a few months after the 30 day warranty! I said no on principle. Non-Profit my A**!

Thank You Thank You Thank You Blah789. For everything.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

Since you have an HP computer you could also call HP for a copy of Windows 2000. They sell for like 10 bucks (with the drivers CD). 1-800-952-7689 You need to give them the serial number of the computer though (it should be on a sticker somewhere).

For the monitor drivers, download the inf here
ftp://ftp.ctxeurope.com/drivers/lcd/pv745/
Then install it manually. (Device manager (start, run, devmgmt.msc), monitors, probably generic pnp monitor (double-click it), driver tab, update driver, then point to where you downloaded the inf)

For graphics, did you try the one from this page
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...5&swEnvOID=181
that goes "Intel 3D Direct Graphics Driver for Windows XP and 2000"?
What actually happens when you install it?

You can also try installing "Microsoft Windows 2000 Fix for AGP" under "Operating System - Enhancements". Perhaps it's an essential patch that fixes incompatibilities with that HP model or something.

Finally this post
http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windo...phix-card.html
suggests it could be a cabling problem. Do you have any other monitor and/or cable you can test with?

Mere curiosity: were you using my IE, or downloading it from Microsoft's site (it shouldn't make a difference, just mine spares you from having to go online and is handy if you have limited bandwidth).

Re: win2k after HD replacement

Good Afternoon.
I'll keep the number but I don't know if it matters that mine is a used machine. I'll try the CTX europe site first.
That 3D driver I'm pretty sure is the one that made me get black screen (I don't think I ever thought of starting in safe mode to delete it)
I downloaded IE6 from the link you provided not the one you loaded to this site. I didn't see your response and link until after I had done it and come to thew site to post my results.

I'm still learning how to install things. Funny that AVG warned me of a Roxio easy CD-RW compatability issue but when I loaded the BIOS driver today from the HP site it told me I don't have one. Maybe one of the other drivers I loaded was still in there. I got the CPQ FlashUtility BIOS to load today and the ROMPaq for Evo D300v (686P9 ROM) didn't load. I'm sorry I forgot to remember the message.
I may need help installing that ctx driver manually I don't have a monitor in Device manager. I also right clicked and chose install from the desktop, before I understood that line was an instruction from you. I also went to start, run, devmgmt.msc, clicked enter and after a lot of noise I see nothing in the device manager and when I chose Video Controller and searched it told me windows was unable to locate driver for this device.
I put the pv745 folder into C:

I did plug in a different monitor this morning and had the same result. It is a Westinghouse LCD
I ordered a recovery disk

Doesn't matter. They'll send you as many recovery kits as you can provide serial numbers.

Not sure what to suggest. If you went ahead with it and tried again, it could trash everything you did before...

Sorry I kind of abridged the instructions. Do you have a section for monitors in device manager at all? And what's listed under graphics adapters?
If you want you can post a screenshot. (focus on the window you want to take the screenshot from, press alt-print-screen (print screen button is in the upper right, near scroll lock). Then open Paint from your start menu, and click edit, paste, then save. To post on here, click on advanced options instead of quick reply at the bottom, and attach it.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

Hi Blah789
I just wanted to let you know I didn't disappear. I am taking care of other things. I shopuld be able to be back on this by the weekend if not before.

Thanks again

Oh there is no monitor section in device manager and I think w/o looking right now, the graphics adapter is one of the items under "other devices" that has a yellow circle with a yellow question mark next to it. The other two devices listed have to do with ethernet and ? I can't recall the third.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

hi Blah789,
i'm here and this is my update.
I received the recovery discs yesterday. There was a complication. The recovery disc was for windows XP home or professional and the OS they sent me was W2K/sp2.
I ran the recovery disc and then found the computer would not accept the OS W2K/sp2 when it asked me to insert the OS disc for XP.
After a half hour and 6-8 calls to HP where I encountered seriously flawed customer service, I finally got thru to a Karen and she sorted it all out. I am to receive another set of discs which should be compatible with each other.

The customer service nightmare went like this: call the order number and told the girl my problem. She told me to call tech support to see what the original OS for my machine was.
I called Tech support where after 10 moinutes I was told I have a business machine and I had to call business tech support.
I called business tech support where I was told my serial number was not a serial number. Come to find out the idiot needed me to say S/N# before I gave the number toi him!!!@!!
He transferred me to his supervisor who turned out to be a very rude jerk who didn't listen to me and kept interupting me then finally hung up on me w/o answering my question. He gave me a general answer that "those machines all had either W2K or XP on them when shipped" he would not tell me about my machine specifically. (the original order taker for the recovery disc had no problem with the Serial Number I gave)
I called back to the recovery disc order center and after having more trouble with the person answering understanding me, I got through to Karen.
Karen solved the issue as I expectedc the first person should have.

I expect I'll probably get the new set of discs by next friday and I'll start again then. Right now I can't use the machine at all as it is at the point in recovery where it needs the OS installed and this particular recovery disc as I mentioned wants windows XP which I don't have.
I figure I'm going to get a W2K compatible recovery disc or the XP OS.

Thanks you Blah789, I'll keep you posted as soon as I get the new discs.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

I got the new disc today it was an XP OS disc. I've installed it and now I need a porduct key for the XP! I'm at a loss for what to do.
I suppose I'll call HP and ask what now?

Re: win2k after HD replacement

HP tech support told me to run the recover disc again and be sure I chose the correct OS (XP Home is the default) and then I should not get a request for the Product Key. So it is now installing Xp again.
I'll post when it is done.

It is 2:32 and since 2:28 the machine screen is black. There was a large arrow cursor, now it is gone. I have moved the mouse to see if it might be screen saver but no apparent effect. The machine is running.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

This really stinks. I can't load XP for lack of a product key. The key in the unattend.txt file doesn't work. I looked at it on my laptop.
Shouldn't HP give me the system recovery discs for the system I have the license for? Or at least give me a product key to use the discs they sent me? How does we don't have a W2K Pro recovery disc or OS qualify as a legitimate stance when they took my money w/o telling me that?
I'm going to call back and insist on a resolution that works.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

HP is continuously transferring me. from the disc seller to tech to business tech and each one is referring me to the nest one The businesss thech wanted me to call the restore disc number!!!!!

Later on.....
Clarity about using the restore disc with XP Home A tech had told me it shouldn't need a product Key:

I placed the restore CD in the tray and ran it.

The restore CD ran then asked me to remove it and place the OS in the tray, I did.

The OS ran and setup and asked me to remove the disc to finish setup, I did.

When setup finished I had a blank screen except for a large arrow curser for about two minutes the the screen stayed black.

That is when I shutdown and started up with the OS cd in the tray and ran bootup from the CD which leads to the Product Key request as it sets up.

I was also told the W2K disc I received should work. I am trying it now. I had it in the tray at startup and am setting up with it now.

I tyhink I'm frantic

Later on.....

The key I have on my machine for the w2k is not working. MS told me it was a legit license! zoinks.
More steps

Re: win2k after HD replacement

Success!!! The machine accepted the Key I found in another folder.
I found these instructions on how to find the key on your disc with another computer; http://ehacks.wordpress.com/2008/01/...windows-xp-cd/
I hope it's ok to post this link. I'll let you know how it runs in a while.

Re: win2k after HD replacement

Ok I'm back. I had dinner and I'm relaxin now. The display problem is gone. XP is installed properly from what I can tell. I'll work on going online and updating later.
It seems my main problem is solved, the machine is running properly with an OS, but the little problems that have come up getting here aren't.
I suspect it is the recovery disc for my HP computer that fixed the display problem and having a legit OS disc also helps. So I'm sorry for W2K people coming here about the display problem but I didn't solve it for W2K, I just got another Operating System. It seems to me the board was somehow corrupted and that caused the problem.

HP was not prepared for this problem and even tho most of the people on the phone tried to help no one seemed to know what to do about my problem. (Having incorrect/incompatible recovery discs sent to me.) Whenever I asked for the correct Win2K recovery disc the subject was changed or I was transferred to someone who wanted to send me back to the department I was just talking to when I asked them for it.
I think this is not something that happens by chance, HP is far too sophisticated to have a setup for recovery discs that is so shabby. I was very specific when I originally ordered the recovery disc about what system I had.
Another problem was that the tech department and Business tech department claimed my S/N# was not a serial number. Yet the people who I ordered the recovery discs from recognized it! I was even told what my machine was when I gave it. There was a comment about how old it is.
So I'll get the updates and try some stuff later or tomorrow and I'll let you all knowthe outcome. I'm pretty sure that'll be the end of this thread for me.

Thank you everyone and especially Blah789.
What a great resource!

Re: win2k after HD replacement

I got sp3 installed, IE8, Spybot S&D, AVG 8.5 free, and whatever MS updates there were from auto update. At first I had a problem instalkling SP3 and IE8 but Auto update installed sp2 after being online for an hour. After that I was able to install SP3 and IE8 easily.

I think that's it for me here. It wasn't solved as I had originally thought it would be but it was solved.
I am concerned that if I allow MS to "verify" my system it won't be legal. I got the product key from inside the program disc and I got the disc legitimately but I still worry that it isn't going to go thru verification. Any comments?

blah789, manic, theoutcaste, and anyone else I might have missed. Your help was invaluable and the knowledge will help me to continue to grow in my computer skills.
