Re: win2k after HD replacement
Ok here's the info on the graphics driver install I'm installing INtel 81x Family chipset graphics driver. It runs all the way right up 99% then I get an error message. A software error occured. please report this to tech support.
Is there a trusted site that will scan my computer and diagnose it? Possibly even direct me where to find what I need? |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
well i did it again. I loaded Nvidia driver and aho graphics driver and now I have a black screen on startup. Very sad.
As it starts I get the windos 2000 logo screen and it just went to black again. The machine sounds like it is loading everything else normally. Last edited by chris47; 07-04-2009 at 03:27 PM. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
I can't even go past 640X480 that is the problem I'm trying to fix
The drivers that made it go black Intel 3D Direct Graphics Driver for Windows XP and 2000 and NVIDIA Graphics Driver for Windows I'm going to delete the Intel driver ans restart to see if it works. I can't find the drivers in adddelete programs? WHere do I find them? Last edited by chris47; 07-04-2009 at 04:19 PM. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
I'm reloading win2000 in hopes of fixing the problem with black screen since I can only delete the programs form the desktop where I placed them to install.

Re: win2k after HD replacement
As it finalized the install after restarting and just as the screen win2000 logo goes off I got a blue screen and this message;
STOP: c0000263 {Driver Entry Point Not Found} The \SystemRoot\System32\Driver\FLTMNGR.SYS device driver could not locate the entry point IoGetDeviceAttachmentsBaseRef in driver ntoskrnl.exe The rest is advice to restart of this is the first time and steps to follow if it happens again. Which takes me back to how do I find and delete those drivers that caused this problem? It came back so I'm in safe mode again.

Re: win2k after HD replacement
Sheesh I'm so screwed. Something corrupted in the NT5INF.CAT file and when I put a cdrw in the tray with SP4 on it, the machine did not detect it. It would not detect it on the flash drive either. That is why I made the disc
I'm reloading and reformatting with win98 then I'm going to install win2k (I suspect the win2k disc is corrupted, the win98 is oem) Then I'll relaod everything I did this morning that got me online. Then I will try to get online again and wait until someone can give me step by step instructions or direct me to a trusted site that scans the computer and tells you exactly what to fix or install. I know it's asking a lot but if I don't ask I'll never get it for sure. I'm very thankful to all of you who have helped. You make the world a better place. I'm very humbled that I did not install several of the driver programs correctly. I thought that putting them on the desktop and clicking them and following the instructions was enough. Apparently that only put some of them into another folder where I was supposed to go and find the setup icon? IDK but it seems I missed something somewhere along the line as I never thought of or ran into this two stage install before. Last edited by chris47; 07-04-2009 at 06:14 PM. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
W2K didn't want to install. Win98 had a bunch of dll files missing and W2K was missing something from sp4 nt5inif.cat or somthing like that. I tried to get the machine to see it on the flash and then a CDR but no luck.
I chose to load W2K to my desktop on the laptop and then burned it another disc with sp4. It seems to be loading successfully now I'll keep you posted. I'm going to rerload the files I did this morning that got mne online to. Let me knmow if you know of a site that can diagnose the computer for me. Last edited by chris47; 07-04-2009 at 08:56 PM. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
It is upand online.ie6setup wouldn't complete installing. No specific reason. IE5 which loaded with the OS keeps having fatal errorswhen I use google? if a search from the browser or use bing which is somehow the default itseemsok butstillmanages a fatalerror every few pages.
I did get itto see the dialup modem so the last thing is display drivers which would seem simple but I'm having a heck of a time. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
I've got scandisk running after loading NVIDIA driver from HP site again. I couldn't get anything from installing it. there is still no Display sector in Device Manager.
Good night people. The dialup connects but getting to pages is difficult or unsuccessful. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
I dunno. The computer sounds old, so it could have problems we're not sure about.
The slipstream SP4 is a VERY good idea. I wouldn't try installing anything without SP4 on first. The two suspects that come to mind is bad hard drive (maybe bad sectors, so the files, even if installed correctly, simply become corrupt on subsequent reads giving unpredictable errors). Hard drive diagnostics might help there. You seem to have a Maxtor, so according to here you'll want these. Other than that it could be unstable electronics... a bad motherboard or modem or something. Hard to diagnose, but if you installed another tried and true OS on it (say XP SP2 or SP3) (clean install) and it still gave you BSOD's and you ruled out everything else, that could be it. This is mostly superstious behavior, but I have a tendency to install things in a specific order. OS (Windows 2000) SP (SP4) and update rollup (1) IE (6 SP1) Windows Installer (3.1 v2) DirectX (9.0c aug 2008) and if I'm not in a huge hurry I toss WMP (9), UPH, and TweakUI (1.33) After all the core Windows components are set up, I install the drivers. I always install the chipset drivers first. Then sata/scsi (if you have them), graphics, sound, network, modem, wireless, and everything else (monitor printer webcams whatever). I always reboot after every single driver is installed if asked to (I never check "reboot later"). If you have Microsoft software (office in particular) install here. After that I go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com or update.microsoft.com (if you have other microsoft software). Usually I do it twice at least (a second time after reboot), because in some cases the first pass doesn't install everything (some stuff might not be installable due to dependencies - second pass will usually detect it) Finally when done, I install everything else (zip/rar archivers, flash, java, firefox, pdf readers, alternative music/media players, codecs, cd burning, antivirus, antispyware, firewall, image viewers, openoffice, games, etc...) Like I said this is mostly superstition, but it works. If you think the computer could be overheating, open the case and blow a fan straight into it (esp if you're getting BSOD's). If you're having trouble with IE6 I could upload the whole package so you don't have to rely on an internet connection to install it. Just say the word. (I always install it this way ever since I downloaded all the files). |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
I finally got the IE6 to load before bedtime. It still crashed a lot anytime I tried google mainly. I think the site that loaded it has somehowq made Bing the default search engine. BTW it's (bing) crap.
Thanks for the links I'm installint dotnet right now and will install seatools right after. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
Here's something while seagate was looking for supported drives an error message came up; (red circle with X) Not Found Void
ThrowWithExtendedInfo(System.Management.ManagementStatus) I'm clicking ok now It keeps scanning for supported drives and now it's gone as I looked away to type. I need another drive don't I? |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
If you put that error message into the seagate knowledge database (I googled it) it will take you to a page that discusses this problem. At the bottom of the page noel-ry70 explains the solution he found describing compatabilitites and he gives a download link for seatools for a W2K system. Apparently the newer versions don't work properly below XP.
This is the linking sentence with the proper version for W2K: "For those who need Seatools for Windows version 1.1.0.3, it's still available as a Windows Installer package from this Seagate page. Digital signature date of the MSI package is March 9, 2007." It's scanning but it started with an error I had to continue threw or it shuts down the program. Re: win2k after HD replacement
I'm pretty sure it is a virus at least with the IE6 Bing search engine thing. It wouldn't let me download Spybot S&D. I've uninstalled IE6 and will try to complete the download again. I have the S&D downloading program onmy desktop it just cannot complete with that IE6 installed.
Got it, Might have been the mirror site. This thing with Bing constantly taking over IE is weird. It's like a virus. I suspect that is a lot of my surfing problem. I think the only machine issue is the display adapter not being there or not being recognized. If I could get higher resolution I could do better searches as it is a lot of pages load up with part of them off screen and I am unable to scoll to the covered part. Hmmmm BTW I scanned with AVG 8.5 free yesterday and found nothing. Oh yea look at that CoolWWWsearch.leftovers on the S&D scan so far says it's a hijacker! I think I love S&D as much as the guy who started it does that girl he did it for.

Re: win2k after HD replacement
According to your Everest report, you have an Intel i752 graphics adapter, not an NVIDIA, so don't try installing the NVIDIA drivers.
(The i752 was never put into production, so it's most likely the 82810 or 82815). If you do have an AGP card installed though, check in the BIOS to make sure it's enabled, rather than the On board video. If you have both, try connecting the Monitor to the On Board video rather than the AGP card. Everest may only report the one that is enabled. It's possible that VGA resolution is sent to both video adapters (this is so you can access the BIOS to change settings), but any higher resolutions are sent to the Display adapter that is enabled as the primary in the BIOS. Might give SIW - System Information for Windows a try. I've had better luck with it than with Everest. Bad memory can also cause all kinds of oddities. Can't hurt to run memory diagnostics for a few passes Memtest 86 Memtest86+

Re: win2k after HD replacement
IEXPLORE.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
[Error number: 0x800706D3] OK blah789 send me IE6 please I can't get a clean download and the stuff above this note is apparently from addons which I cannot find and other stuff I am now looking for. There is something going on with Bing. Is that a MS search engine? It is so closely associated I can't think of anything else. S&D removed ten different bugs and I uninstalled IE6 and I still get Bing! Last edited by chris47; 07-05-2009 at 04:22 PM. |

Re: win2k after HD replacement
I'm getting closer on the display issue. It seems I csannot change the default display. I have a CTX PanoView 745 monitor and I vaguely recall this problme from a decade ago. Can anyone help as I cannot find any "change" choices in display settings. I tr4ied advanced and click forward on all possible links to find no option to change.
