Can't delete any files off desktop

Very strange. I can't delete any files off my desktop, so it's beginning to get really crowded.

If I try to delete, or drag into waste basket, or rename and delete, etc. they all just come back when I restart the computer.

Tried every setting I can find on desktop properties.

I've run norton / symantec antivirus and spyblaster and spybot. So far, no results.

Any insights?

I'm using Windows 2000. classic setup.

Is this a work computer or one used in your home?
