So I got this laptop(Systemax), haven't used for like 3 years I think. last operating system I remember on it was Windows 2000, I'm not sure which one. I cant remember the specs on it since I was quite young, now when i turn it on it starts up normal (Starting windows, bar flies across) then BAM blue screen and it calls me a bad pool caller?
*** STOP: 0x000000C2 (0×00000007, 0×00000b8a, 0xf955c940, 0xf955c948) BAD_POOL_CALLER so I thought I'm gonna get my windows 2000 install disk and chuck it in there, but for some reason it doesn't respond to the CD and goes straight to booting from the hard drive (yes I changed the boot order via bios to CD). so i try my XP OS, but this time its a different blue screen. STOP: 0*000000A5 The bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor for an updated bios. If you are unable to obtain an updated bios or the latest bios supplied by your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompted to install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed–it will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation. someone told me i have to update the bios. but how am i gonna do that if i cant even log in. HELP!

Re: Need help...fast
Hello and welcome to TSF...
First thing you need to do is to test RAM sticks and HDD... To test RAM, use MemTest86+ http://www.memtest.org/ Check what make/model is your HDD, visit manufacturers We Site, download diagnostic tools and test HDD for possible bad sectors... Also, take out RAM sticks and clean the contacts with rubber eraser... Clean the heat-sink with compressed air from the dust as well as inside the laptop very carefully... You can update BIOS with Floppy Disc... But I guess you need an external Floppy Disk Drive unless you have one built in laptop [since you said you have not been using laptop for over 3 years, so its a bit older model] Visit manufacturers Web Site and obtain latest approved BIOS update... have you tried to disable ACPI in BIOS??? If not, do that and try to install operating system... By the way, are you trying to install Retail version of Windows XP or OEM one??? Keep us posted... |

Well, get into BIOS and check settings...
If you cannot find option to disable ACPI in BIOS, try with F7 key during Setup... You can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompted to install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed–it will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation |

Re: Need help...fast
In BIOS make sure your first boot device is CD-ROM, second boot device is HDD...
this way you will boot from CD and go to Setup section... |

Re: Need help...fast
i got some recommendations saying that i should update my bios so it is ACPI compatible. this is way to confusing. windows 2000 wont install and windows XP wont install, Kubuntu works but it sucks cuz it don't run any EXE files.

Re: Need help...fast
As was recommended, you can flash the BIOS to the newest revision by visiting the mfg website and see what they have. Or you can hit F7 when attempting to install Windows 2000 or XP. If it's bypassing the CD and going right to the HD, then you might have an issue with the disks you're trying to install from.
As for KUBUNTU, there are some Windows applications you can run by installing WINE or one of the other windows emulators available, but it does depend on the applications you're hoping to install.
