[SOLVED] Windows 2000 wants SP 4

I recently installed Windows 2000 Professional on a donated computer. It is a HP Compac nc6000. It asks for SP 4. I put in a cd with SP loaded on it and it will not recognize the cd. Any ideas on how to get it to recognize the cd. If I put a thumb drive in a slot, it will not recognize it either. Stumped. Appreciate any and all help.

Re: Windows 2000 wants SP 4

I'd recommend trying different CDs (like music CDs or other data CDs) before blaming the disk drive for not reading disks. Moreover did you try using USB drives on this computer ever before or its just started happening recently??

P.S: As you said its a donated computer,No wonder if the motherboard is stuffed up.

Re: Windows 2000 wants SP 4

I'm wondering if you're using a full product version or upgrade CD when it wants an OEM CD.

BTW did your PC come with a CD? If not you can get one from HP for almost nothing if you have the sticker on the underside with the product ID (normally Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro for the nc6000 I think). The number to call is 1-800-952-7689. You'll be asked for the serial number of the laptop (also on a sticker on the underside of the laptop). The CD should be 10 bucks. They accept credit card and money orders.

You have to provide them with the serial number of your laptop, and the Windows XP or 2000 CD they provide ONLY works with the nc6000.

I know all this because I got two nc8000 someone sold at a computer show without operating systems (but with the product ID stickers on them). HP confirmed that the stickers allowed me to get a CD from them.

I found the solution to this problem. I reinstalled Windows 2000 and this time it worked. CD rom must have fell short on the first install. I appreciate the posts. In the future, I wll use this forum for future problems.
