Unable to log in as Administrator to Windows 2000
I am running windows 2000 on a 7yr old laptop. Since loading Avast AV I have been unable to log in as administrator. (I get log on box in which I can write the password then get “loading personal settings” which is as far as goes; I just then have a blue screen with the egg timer - it maybe something to do with a lack for resources- maybe something to do with virtual memory)
I can however log in as a subsidiary User. As I think the problem is with resource hungry Avast I want to uninstall it. However I can not do this from the subsidiary User account. 1 Is there a way to uninstall from the subsidiary account by someway overriding the User account restrictions? 2 And/or is there a way to get in to the administrator account? Any help/suggestions much appreciated. Thanks |

Lets try it old style and make sure you have your data backed up, just in case...
As you said u have a 7yr old laptop, I am assuming your computer is not a member of any domain and its fitted with floppy drive. If yes, then get a bootable floppy disk and boot your computer using it. Now drill to C:/Windows/System32/Config location and move (not copy) a file called "SAM" from its location to floppy. Take the floppy out and restart your computer. If it asks for a username simply press enter or fill the username and leave password field blank and press enter. In you go.............do what ever you wanna do, reboot and replace SAM file to its location and you should be using it as you were. wish you luck |

Re: Unable to log in as Administrator to Windows 2000
thanks; Managed to sort it out thro safe sae mode.
Touching on an point: I want to download KeyScrambler as an add-on for Firefox in a subsidiary User A/C. This I can only do through Firefox’s “Get add-ons” The problem is that this download add-on is an earlier version. It is only possible to get the latest Keyscrambler version outside Firefox for the administrator a/c. 1 Is there a way to get the latest version into the subsidiary User a/c? 2 Is it possible to give administrator rights to a subsidiary User a/c Any help or advice would be much appreciated |

Re: Unable to log in as Administrator to Windows 2000
If I were you, I would rely on 'Spyware Doctor" rather than keyscramble program. It hasn't received good reviews from techs. One thing is for sure it kills the system speed as it does alot of encryption and decryption. Moreover you have an old lappy too. But if are happy with it and want to allow a subsidiary user a/c to install it, you would need to add that user to a "power user" group or alternatively you can right click and allow "execute" permision in security tab for that a/c.
Regarding giving an administrator rights to access to user accounts, I doubt if there is such settings in Win2k. If you want access to users' documents you can do that easily by drilling down to C:/Documents and settings/"user a/c" but you need to be logged in as an administrator. Is there something specific you are after? |
