Win2k Pro Random Reboots
Hey,
Ok, basically I have a win2k box that reboots all the f'in time and it's driving me mad. The machine was stable for about 6 months, literally no problems, then from nowhere it started rebooting. There were no driver changes, no new hardware, nothing had changed in the machine at all. First off I thought 'overheating' but temps were all ok (processor running at 50degC ish) and I swapped out my Radeon 9800 Pro to make sure it wasn't that, but still it reboots. Next, a virus or maybe a driver issue. So I did a complete reinstall of the OS (from a bootable CD), and during the reinstallation guess what happened. A reboot. That ruled out a virus and probably the driver issue (it crashed during the deletion of the old win2k install). Eventually I got it installed, and now it reboots about 5 minutes after booting into windows, but it's not repeatable (ie there's nothing that I can do to make it happen, the only consistent thing is that soon after booting into windows it goes at some point, generally quite quickly). I've swapped around the memory, taken everything but the basics out of it and yet it still reboots. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Only things left are the motherboard, the PSU and the HD. I've already disabled the 'reboot on major disaster' thing in the startup and recovery options, and yet it still does it. Just as it reboots I get a brief flash of a BSOD but it goes too quickly and I can't see what it says. ARGGGG. It's so annoying. D. d. Last edited by justdave : 12-20-2004 at 09:37 AM. |

First replace all the hardware so it is exactly like it was before. Then, as quickly as you can, right click my computer, click the advanced tab, click the settings tab under "startup and recovery" and ensure that "automatically restart" is unchecked. After doing that, wait until it crashes and see if it shows a blue screen. If it does, state what it says.

Power quality problems also come to mind. If your comp is plugged into a power strip you might try plugging it directly into the wall, or even another socket. That would rule out a failing power strip or outlet. And of course the PSU unit is always a suspect.
