Evil cd rom is gone and wont reinstall

w2000 pro OS. factory installed samsung dvd-cdrom. installed liteon cd-rw and both worked fine. burn went bad, had to reboot. bios sees cd drives, dos sees neither, my computer shows no cd drives and device manager shows an "!" over both drives with an error code 31 "windows failed to load drivers". i uninstalled both drives and rebooted. reinstalled only the samsung after changing ide controllers to factory setting (i.e, cd rom is master) and I get the same problems, bios sees it, dos doesn't, my computer shows only, a:\ drive, c:\ drive and control panel and device manager shows a "!" over the samsung with the same error code 31. i've uninstalled the burner software. the drivers are where they should be. what did the burner do to my system? thanks

Do you have the drivers for the cd-rom and dvd drive??? If so try updateing the drivers and reinstalling the drives.

You could go to www.google.com and type in the name/model/drivers of the cdrom and scanner or go directly to IBM and the maker of the cd rom and try getting the latest drivers there.

For Windows 2000, you shouldn't need any drivers, other than the Microsoft supplied drivers. What leads you to believe you need 3rd party drivers?

I'd start at IBM for the color scanner, though the other references may well be more fruitful.

Send a message via ICQ to Uranium-235 Send a message via AIM to Uranium-235 Send a message via Yahoo to Uranium-235
For DOS you can use generic DOS drivers for CDRoms.

But I thought there is no DOS under 2k. This off a boot disk?

Win2K doesn't support anything and everything under the sun. If its not on the HCL then you need your own drivers for that device.

lol
well I thought I changed the jumper to slave befor I put the cd-rom in but i didnt

then i got locked out of my apt. and typed that last message from the library a block away till my landloard woke up
its ok now
but as far as the IBM color flatbed scanner P/N 01k1210 goes
I dont know, Ive been searchen for a driver or a way to install it for a couple of days now.

it says on the disk win3x, 95, nt4.0

it wont install

it made icons on the desktop an i went to properties an there was a tab sayen something about reverting, thats not a quote, icant really remember exactly
but under the arrow i choose the 95 andt nt an tried to install it that way too

but I need more info on it, cause just applying it did not work

anyhow thanks for the info fellas
Id really like to get the scanner installed right but im thinking maybe its just too old
whata yous think?
think theres a way
if no drivers are available?

ps

HCL is the hardware combatability list MS made for Win2K. And is your scanner a USB or paralel port scanner?

Also if you want to see the HCL you would need to get your Win2K Pro cd out and let it run. You would want to browse the cd and go under the support folder and there should be a text document named hcl.txt. It list all the hardware that MS says that works with Win2K.

Hello bobbystills and welcome to Tech Support Forums........:D

You may not realize it but what you have done here is called hijacking a thread. If you are having issues with your hardware you should start your own thread not pounce on someone elses.

That way any post that winds up on your thread will be easier to figure out instead of trying to solve two issues on one thread.

So please try to stick with the rules of the forum.... Thank You....:|

I've installed W2K on dozens of machines, some with pretty old hardware. I've yet to see a CD-ROM drive that wasn't recognized and work properly with stock W2K. The ATAPI specification for CD access is pretty firm, and other than oddball disk changers and the like, I'll bet 99.9% of the CD drives will work without drivers.

johnwill is right!

I think every Windows OS since W95USB on up will support Atapi CD Roms without the installation of any drivers.

And on Win95 you needed to install the Atapi driver before you could install the OS off of a CD Rom.
