Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
Hello,
So here is the deal, I have a computer at work that runs Windows 2000 pro and it crashed on me. I did a clean reinstall of windows and all is running properly. I didnt have any of the drivers so I spent the better part of yesterday finding all the drivers I need. After hours of scouring the only thing that wasnt working was the Ethernet Controller and a PCI serial port. I finally got the Ethernet Controller to work after doing some tweaking in the services.msc menu and starting windows management instrumentation and installing a drive I found. Now the only thing that doesnt work is the PCI serial port. I need this to work as attached to this port is a necessary device for our office computer. My question is, how in the hell do I get this to work. The computer is is a COMPAQ EVO D510 small form desktop pc. I have tried many of the drivers on their site for this system, what type of drivers shoud I be looking for, what is a PCI Serial port? Thanks in advance |

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
I would think if the chip set drivers didn't fix it, Could it be an add on card?

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
Are you basing the name on what you're seeing in Device Manager (Other Devices with yellow exclamation mark)?
If my memory is correct, modems tend to be named PCI Serial Communication Device or something like that. You could do a manual enumeration of what you have drivers for and what you don't. Chipset, graphics card, monitor, sound card, ATA/SATA controller, optical drive, ethernet cards, modems, SCSI or RAID, USB, firewire, floppy controller, parallel, serial, keyboard, mice, printers, imaging devices (scanners or webcams). That's the bulk of what I see on my device manager. The trick is to count the slots/holes and/or number of PCI cards and eliminate the ones you already have drivers for, then figure out which ones you don't. @wrench97: good job digging up the one-stop-shop for EVO510 drivers! |

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
It is our modem..I think. This is a retail system that still dials credit cards via an external modem. If that is the case is there any other way to get drivers for this? It seems that the computer is not seeing the modem since it cant comunicate with the slot. I am not super versed in this sort of thing. I did try all the drivers I could find from the "official site" the only thing that still wont work is this damn modem....

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
Do you have any idea what modem it is? You will most likely have to use the install disk that would have come with the external modem or see if you can D/L it from the manufactures web site.

Is the external modem plugged into a connector in a slot, does one of these look familiar? http://www.usbgear.com/1x-Serial-PCI.html

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
Do you have a modem listed in your device manager already? The only included (internal) modem on the HP page is the Lucent one.
What external device is connected to your PC and how is it connected (what kind of cable)? Do you see any inscriptions on it that would say the brand and model number of the device? |

And if you turn off the computer, unplug said device, and reboot, does it disappear from device manager (you may need to click refresh to be doubly sure).

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
The modem is a U.S. Robotics V92 usr5686e. It is connected via a large cable (something like one of the ones you showed pictured) I dont have a disk for it, but I am running windows 2000 pro, if I could get this back up it would be a life saver, any more information you need I can get for you.

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
http://www.usr.com/support/product-t...asp?prod=5686e (second driver, the one marked version 5.04.62.2)
The steps for you may be a bit different. You'll have to unzip to a folder like they said (C:\Temp for example is fine). In device manager if you have any sportster modems listed you'll have to remove them and reboot. Then in device manager double click the PCI serial port and click on the driver tab, then click update driver, and install from a specific location (you'll probably get a box like 'include this location in search': check it then browse and select the folder where the files are stored - C:\Temp in our example). At the end it may or may not ask you to reboot. If all goes fine, the following time you run device manager, there should be no yellow exclamation marks left. P.S: do you have monitor drivers? Those tend to be overlooked a lot because even if it lists "generic monitor" it never has a yellow exclamation mark. Yeah I know - I just loooove to make that device manager yellow-question-mark-free. It's so satisfying though. Last edited by blah789; 08-30-2008 at 01:16 AM. |

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
I have an ELO touch monitor and even though I downloaded the drivers from the website, it still wont work. I have no touch functionality. it is hooked up via a serial port and is model number FPD1550-03...I think, thats one of the numbers I see on the back of it...

http://www.elotouch.com/Support/Downloads/dnld.asp (top one) Could it be in the archived drivers instead? http://www.elotouch.com/Support/Downloads/ (because the manual for numbers close to 1550 are in the discontinued section of the manual downloads) In any case I couldn't find the actual manual for the 1550, but I could find some for numbers close (1546 was the closest for LCD and other 1540's for CRT). The manual suggests that particular model can also be hooked via USB (in addition to serial). Do you have that option with your 1550? If so, perhaps try giving it a shot. You need to install the drivers for the USB connection separately though I think. |

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
blah said If my memory is correct, modems tend to be named PCI Serial Communication Device or something like that.
True if it's an internal modem PCI card, this is an external modem using Serial I/O (RS232) fredman said I have an ELO touch monitor and even though I downloaded the drivers from the website, it still wont work. I have no touch functionality. it is hooked up via a serial port and is model number FPD1550-03...I think, thats one of the numbers I see on the back of it... Based on what your saying: -the modem goes to a slot, -monitor's com line goes to a serial port. -a PCI Serial port device still needs drivers to be installed. Then it's likely there is a Serial I/O card being used. Okay, let's approach this from a different direction and verify it. The external modem cable goes to a connector: 1. that is part of the computer (other connectors near it for video and printer, mouse , keyboard). ANSWER: modem is connected to serial port COM1 or COM2 2. on a thin metal strip about a half inch wide and 4 inches long (in one of the ISA\PCI expansion slots). ANSWER: modem is connected to a Serial I/O card. you will need the make-n-model from this card to download the driver. --------------------------------------------------------------------NEXT You went to USR5686E webpage http://www.usr.com/support/product-t...asp?prod=5686e Downloaded this file USR5686E.zip (6 KB 07-06-06) from section: Version 5.04.62.2 - Win 95, 98, NT, 2000, Me, XP, Server 2003, XP 64 bit, and Server 2003 64 bit INF file and followed the 6 step procedure shown in that section, particulairly; Quote:

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
I think you're right about needing a driver for the serial i/o card, I dont know how to locate a number, I have a compaq evo d510 and have not been able to locate anything on that port. If I can find that driver we might actually get this to work.

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
I discovered this in the meantime somewhere else in the forum.
http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html Unknown device identifier. Don't know how good it is, but it's worth a try. |

Re: Recovering from major crash, just one driver short
The only for sure way to identify the card is to open the computer case and pull the card.
We might be able to use a profiler like blah suggests to get the info though, so lets try that first. If that one doesn't work out then use this one... Make a folder on your desktop named Everest, download the everesthome220.zip file to the Everest folder and unzip the contents. DOWNLOAD Everest Home Edition 2.20 portable version Softpedia Mirror (US) [everesthome220.zip] This is a portable version of Everest, meaning it doesn't install itself into windows. So you can put the folder on a flash drive if you like-to use Everest on another computer with a Windows OS. Start Everest (everest.exe) then look down the Menu list for Devices, double click it then click Physical Devices. In Device Description at top is PCI Devices, look for the word Serial and that will be the card we need the drivers for. Let us know how your doing so far.
