I have an ancient laptop sold to me secondhand, running Windows 2000 Pro. My daughter's friend somehow changed a setting so that it boots up to the log on screen and requires the admin password. Simply putting in my valid username and password does not launch windows: I get the bad password error message. Nothing I do gets me past the login screen. I've tried booting from a CD with an ISO file image, but the laptop insists on going to the log on screen. Windows Key + R won't get me to the DOS prompts. This is an HP/Compac NC6000. Any ideas?

Re: Login requires admin password
You didn't specify when the password is required. If it is during BIOS load you need to pull the CMOS battery, wait 20 minutes and then reboot. If it's during WIN 200o loading: Go into safe mode by pressing F8 at boot up. Click on administrator profile. Open control panel. Go to user profiles select the profile that is locked. remove password. This was a security flaw that Microsoft didn't address in the NT systems until XP service pack 2. After this I suggest that you create your own password of mixed ALpha-Numeric symbols NOT names, birthdays or holiday dates! PS: Why the H*** would you buy a HP or Compaq?
