Question Cable ethernet XP-Win2K

On both machines, the icon has the "a network cable has been unplugged" status. I have a yellow cable which has been tested today for joining the two Realtek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet Nic cards.

I have put in ip addresses as follows: XP = 10.5.0.1 Win2K = 10.5.0.2, with subnet 255.0.0.0. There are no DNS addresses entered.

The XP box has a wirless card which connects to the net via a router in another room. They run on the 192.168.x.x series.

I want the XP box to be host and the Win2K box to be client, so I can share programs and files. The Win2k box should also be able to access the internet via the host XP box, as well as its printer.

Hoping that someone can help me here.

Re: Cable ethernet XP-Win2K

"a network cable has been unplugged" usually means that whatever they are connecting to is not trancieving. Do you have one "ethernet cable" joining the two machines together, or are they joined through a router? If you wanted to eliminate the router requirement, you can purchase something called a "crossover cable" which is a special cabled designed to join two NICs together.
