CPU at 100% & buffer overruns
#1. I've noticed Services.exe and SVChost can cause really nasty overloading on my CPU (celleron 2.66 g).
Microsoft mentions this and claims the problem was resolved with SP4. Wrong! SVChost sometimes does this too. Any ideas? ![]() #2. I was monitoring processes (and now I can't find where I could do it) and the utility was saying I was getting buffer overruns. The CPU was not maxed when this was occuring. Any ideas? ![]() |

Re: CPU at 100% & buffer overruns
Are programs crashing? You aren't overclocking, are you? Install Windows 2000's "Update Rollup 1" It is sort of a pre-SP5 release. These updates should have been applied automatically if you have automatic updates enabled, but if you don't give the rollup a shot. Another option is to run AutoPatcher 2000 on this system. They collect hotfixes and bundle them in a pack along with other essential updates. You may have missed an update or two...
Without further information from you, this is all I can think of at the moment... Good luck!

Re: CPU at 100% & buffer overruns
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. No, my programs aren't crashing but occasionally some shut down with difficulty if I've had my computer on for a number of days and haven't been using it. Overclocking...nope. To the best of my knowledge I have all the updates/hotfixs. I just reloaded the rollup again yesterday as a system diagnostic utility I tried said there was a registry entry missing so it could not verify that I had installed some windows update. I'll try that site and their software and see what they come up with. Lastly, it seems that the 2 problems I mention in my initial post either came to be or became exacerbated after I installed Kaspersky's AV 7.0. I can't be sure but that's what I recall. I could try unloading and see if things improve. |

I wouldn't think Celerons would have the stamina to be run for days on end. The Pentiums, Core/Core 2's, and Xeon's would be better suited for that kind of computing. Celerons are like the econoline CPU. I wouldn't recommend the for more than just an after-work web surfing capacity.
It could be a heat issue, try the freeware utility "SpeedFan" and see if anything in your system is running hot... EDIT: I had a Pentium 4 system that would refuse to boot after being run for 3 weeks non-stop. I left it alone for half a day and it came back to life. You can bet I replaced the CPU fan ASAP.

Re: CPU at 100% & buffer overruns
af3...I tried speed fan and my cpu is running hot. Averaging around 48 deg C and jumping up to 53/54 periodically. My HD is also running a little warm. Time to replace the fan, eh? Also, I know Celleron's aren't the best but you'd think they'd at least they'd be able to just sit and do essentially nothing without getting attitude.

Get a non-oem non-stock intermediate fan. Don't get the factory default, but don't go nuts as it is just a Celleron. If your case has poor ventalation, a new fan would not help too much. Maybe you should consider getting a new case with better airflow.
Some cases sell for $30: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...676&CatId=1509 Here is a $20 fan for a socket 775 Celeron: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...739&CatId=1588 And a $24 fan for a socket 478 Celeron: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...=celeron%20fan You can rescue it for cheap these days. ![]()
