Re: dns error on ie6
You can try to prove out your browser or PC as being the issue by doing the following:
From a command prompt and on the machine you are having issues, try and telnet to port 80 on the site you're trying to get to. Do you get there? e.g. at command prompt: telnet websitename.com 80 If yes, your browser is preventing you from accessing the site, if NOT ... lets dig a little deeper... Have you tried to ping the IP address of the site or better yet ping the site name? What happens? Are you successful or does it fail? e.g. at command prompt: ping websitename.com If it fails, try running a trace route (tracert) from the command line to the website. Do you get past your own network? e.g. at command prompt: tracert websitename.com Last edited by Tekmazter : 05-23-2008 at 05:35 PM. |

Re: dns error on ie6
If you're on a network and the network is not administered by you, then perhaps they're filtering the sites you can get to?

telnet 63.165.24.102 80 This is the actual site IP Address. You can also confirm DNS is working by doing the following: nslookup mgmgrand.com My return shows as follows: Non-authoritative answer: Name: mgmgrand.com Addresses: 216.190.168.52, 63.165.24.102 If you can't telnet to either of these IP's, it's not due to DNS. Re: dns error on ie6
first, i am basically in charge of the network computer and its not blocked i was able to go to this site from another workstation and the mainframe.
1) the response from my computer to telnet 63.165.24.102 80 was a blank blank screen with the cursor just blinking.-HAD TO EXIT OUT AND THEN TRIED YOUR SECOND OPTION 2) NSLOOKUP MGMGRAND.COM >> HERE WAS MY RESPONSE C:\DOCUME~1\JOANN>nslookup mgmgrand.com *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.2: Non-existent domain *** Default servers are not available Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.1.2 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to UnKnown timed-out |

Lets talk DNS servers shall we. First, do an ipconfig /all. Do you see DNS servers listed? If yes, then you need to check your DNS server to find out what the deal is. Why doesn't it resolve anything for you etc... If NO, then you DHCP server is not handing out either a correct IP Address for the DNS server on your LAN or it's not configured to hand out one at all. Can you please confirm and post back? BTW one final way to prove out your DNS issue is to do the following: edit your hosts file on this local PC ... and put the IP address and name of the site mgmgrand.com inside of it. Then reboot and attempt to access the mgmgrand.com site. It should work and thus prove out your DNS is hosed. Thanks! ON A SIDE NOTE: You can actually input some commands while you're at the black screen with flashing cursor using telnet. In other words, you can get a response from the site showing you're connected. When you have some time to play, give it a whirl 'telnet mgmgrand.com 80' and when you get the flashing cursor, type wget and press ENTER. Check out the response. Re: dns error on ie6
To edit the HOSTS file, open Windows Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options > View tab. Remove the checkmark from 'Hide protected operating system files' and click OK.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and open the file in Notepad. When you've finished editing, click File > Save, not Save As... which will change the extension to .txt Reset the 'Hide protected OS files' option. EDIT: HOSTS is not associated with Notepad, so the easiest way to open it is to drag it from Explorer into Notepad.

Re: dns error on ie6
Okay, so we know you can hit the site using telnet over port 80 and the IP Address. Try to just dump the ip address into iternet explorers address bar like so: http://216.190.168.52
Do you get to the site? BTW ... it looks like mgmmirage is also up now and can substitute for mgmgrand. Can you get there (http://www.mgmmirage.com) Do you have any other equipment in your environment which would restrict access from this machine to anything? Is there any software on this machine which might restrict access to certain IP ranges? Last edited by Tekmazter : 05-29-2008 at 04:00 PM. |

Re: dns error on ie6
thanks tek,
I CUT/PASTED the ip address in the ie address bar, same error "page can not be displayed", also tried the mgmmirage.com address same error. im not sure if anything else is restricting this site..oh, btww---------- when i receive email from mgm, all of the pictures/data doesnt show even if i have them as safe. maybe this can also give u a clue as to the problem. all of the email from mgm has the captions for the picture/data ,but no other info, just blank white screen. I tried to right click and hit show picture but nothing. i tried the option "open w/alternate view" nothing. ![]() |

One other option could be it's going through a proxy server? Another question that also comes to mind is whether this computer has ever been able to browse successfully to the vegas sites, or if this is something new. There could be selective filtering going on for some specific clients, but not knowing how long jobowl has been the administrator of the network makes it hard to know.
