What to use to install Windows 2000 Pro

Just won an auction on eBay for a Dell Dimension 4300 computer w/o operating system installed and want to install Windows 2000 Pro, what do I need to buy?

Have legal copy of Windows 98 and Word 1997.

Do I install Windows 98 and then buy an upgrade version of Windows 2000 Pro or the full install version?

The 150 Gb harddrive has been wiped by the seller and it is a pentium 4 1.4 ghz cpu (I think).

Do not want to buy new Word at this time, so am ruling out Windows XP.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Re: What to use to install Windows 2000 Pro

If it were me, I'd get the full version (if you can still find it) because that would most likely the most current (with SP4) and you'd have the best chance of having some of the drivers present. I'd also check the Dell site to make sure that they have Windows 2000 drivers available before purchasing it since they may not. If they don't you could have a hard time getting everything to work properly.

Thanks. Did not know there was a SP4. Will concentrate on getting full version. I think that all the drivers are available, if not would Windows XP be a better choice?

Re: What to use to install Windows 2000 Pro

Word has nothing to do with the choice of Operating systems ( W2K or XP ) . . it is a component of Office or Works. Right now you can uy XP cheaper than W2k . .

Does the pc have a sticker on the side of the tower that looks like this?

Do not know what is on the outside of the computer. Checked Dell support site and it shows drivers for Windows 2000 and XP.

The computer has a 1.6 Ghz Pentium 4 cpu, 150 GB hard drive, Nvidia GeForce TI Video Card, Creative sound card, CD/DVD read/write drive and 512 MB sdram.

Windows 2000 Pro is about $50.00 on eBay and Windows XP $100.

I have Office 97 and would like to keep using it. Got to save some money!

Thought that Windows 2000 Pro (do not see plain Windows 2000 for sale anywhere) would be better for an older system and do not think that Office 97 would run under Windows XP.

Please enlighten me as to what to do.

Thanks in advance.

PS Scheduled to receive on 5/27.

When you get it, look for a sticker like the one I posted . . if it has one for wither W2k, or XP, all you need is an install disc . . that will be your Product KeyThanks in advance.

Rich,

Just keep looking on eBay and sooner than later you will see Windows 2000 Pro for around $50 w/o shipping.

Did not know that my version of Word would run on XP!

So, Windows XP (Home Edition) would be better than Window 2000 Pro. Noticed that the everyone on eBay seems to be selling the OEM edition of Windows XP. Could I use that or do I have to buy it from a computer store, it costs about twice as much there. I am assuming that I can get a legal unused copy.

Will look for sticker as you suggest upon receipt of computer. If it does not have one do I use the COA that comes with the software? Like the one below:

Thank you for your help.

Re: What to use to install Windows 2000 Pro

Rich,

Got computer and it has the badge on front saying "Designed for Windows XP", but the sticker on the side is for Windows ME. Can I still use that as the product key?

The guy I bought it from was running Windows XP Pro. I will be running Windows XP Home. Should I format the drive with NTFS file system? Want to be able to transfer files between this computer and my old Windows SE using a R/W cd.

Re: What to use to install Windows 2000 Pro

Rich,

System up and running Windows XP Home Edition. Easiest install ever!

Minor problem when system checking self. It sometimes does not know that it has a DVD drive. Think that it is the system backup battery, will replace it.

Thanks for your help and advice. Went to Newegg to get the operating system as you suggested.
