Another password nigthmare
I have checked Users and Passwords on my 2 machines.
I reinstalled Win2k on a machine on the workgroup called homenet. Both machines now run under Win2k. Now I am having password headaches. The workgroup should be established. I can see both machines but I can't login in. I've cleared users and passwords as best I could but the error is still there. I want no passwords. |

Re: Another password nigthmare
I see that users are reported differently in Win2k under
System and then under user profiles. why is that. The user profile in System is LON2BIOSTAR/administrator. The user name in Users and passwords is lon (lower case el oh en so this doesn't give any confusion). I have a folder marked as a share (with the hand on it) and my workgroup is called homenet. The folder also shows as open with the net pipe under it when showing on the opposite machine. There are only 2 machines, one called lon1machspeed and the other lon2biostar. lon2biostar was reinstalled with Win2k. XP is prone to tampering and I took it off. If I close the folder (I don't know if I can) will that give access to it to transfer files? Why am I locked out of all this stuff? I make installs as simple to navigate as I can and still have problems after a new install. |

Re: Another password nigthmare
some progress
With the shared folder on the host machine (where the folder resides) closed I was able to transfer a file out. At the user password prompt I used administrator and that was somehow valid. This just reaffirms my question above. Why do users show up differently in system and users/passwords. these things are not straightened out yet but at least I have a way to move files one way. |

Re: Another password nigthmare
Basically to share files easily, you must have usernames (Account Name) that match on each machine. Doing this should minimize the problems. You can also have different names if you wish, however, when computer1 connects to computer2 and you're prompted for a username and password, you must use a valid username and password that exists on computer2. The reason you're seeing a "name" that's different depending on where you're looking is because you really have two names to deal with. One is the account name and the other is the "Display Name". The two can be different. I find it easiest to manage names in Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Local Users and Groups . From there you can see both, account name and display name. When logging in to a computer, the only name that really counts is the account name. That's also the name of the folder that appears under documents and settings. For example you could make a user called BOB with a password of BOB, yet when you log in (using BOB and BOB) you could have his display name show up as Robert Smobert if you want, but ultimately it's the account name that you login with.
