Defrag Runs... but Doesn't Defrag
Hi, I've got Windows 2000 Pro SP4 I run defrag analysis which tells me:
Volume (E:): Volume size = 76,316 MB Cluster size = 4 KB Used space = 53,896 MB Free space = 22,420 MB Percent free space = 29 % Volume fragmentation Total fragmentation = 40 % File fragmentation = 79 % Free space fragmentation = 2 % File fragmentation Total files = 74,384 Average file size = 1,288 KB Total fragmented files = 524 Total excess fragments = 338,709 Average fragments per file = 5.55 Pagefile fragmentation Pagefile size = 768 MB Total fragments = 1 Directory fragmentation Total directories = 9,887 Fragmented directories = 3 Excess directory fragments = 4 Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation Total MFT size = 99 MB MFT record count = 87,741 Percent MFT in use = 85 % Total MFT fragments = 2 I click to run the defrag and it goes through the motions, showing the bar, showing "Defragmenting.." on the status bar and taking time to do so -about 10 min or so - but at the end the HD is no more defragged than before?!?! Actually it is exactly where it started ! I'm running AVG, ZAlarm, Launchy. Could those be problematic? Any ideas? Thanks in advance guys! |

Re: Defrag Runs... but Doesn't Defrag
ok I'm back, I rebooted into safe mode and ran the microsoft defrag utility, it went through the motions and just like before the HD was as fragmented as before!
this is really weird. any ideas? perhaps a third party utility can succeed when MS's failed? appreciate any input as this is critical... my HD is massively fragmented and it really needs to be put right. thank you! |

Re: Defrag Runs... but Doesn't Defrag
What Files and directory's is the report listing as fragmented?
If they are system files defrag will not touch them.

Re: Defrag Runs... but Doesn't Defrag
I'm not sure what more details I can get or where I can get them, I c/p the report (see above)
Since the percentage is so high I think it is very probable to almost certain that there are non system files at play here. Any other ideas appreciated! anyone have any experience with spinrite? |
