NTFS Conversion failure

Decided to convert my second drive to NTFS. The conversion did not complete (still hadn't rebooted after 25 hours.) So (with trepidation) I hit reset and as the system was loading I got this message:

Checking file system on D:
The type of the file system is FAT32

One of your drives needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel this disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Volume serial number is 2276-17F5
Windows is verifying files and folders...
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows is verifying free space...
44 percent completed....

Now, it has been stuck on 44 % for an hour; I am looking for advice. Thanks - Dane
PS - Any idea why the conversion failed?

Re: NTFS Conversion failure

Update. Located the setup CD and booted the Recovery Console. Issued a

chkdsk d: /f /v

And the first thing it said was "The type of the file system is NTFS" (!).
It fixed a dozen small errors, after which I could boot normally. Opened cmd window and ran chkdsk on both drives and found no errors. In short, amazingly, I eventually got what I was after with no losses (of files or apps). Of course, I am still clueless why all the hangups.
