Win2K locks up with any external serial modem

I STILL can't get an external serial modem to work on this board.

This is the second P4P800-E Deluxe I've tried, I RMA'ed the first one,
I changed ram to an Asus approved module, changed video card and psu, and I have tried 2 different brands of modems. I installed service pack 4

The modem installation appears to go OK, but as soon as I click
"query modem" under the modem "diagnostics" tab, or when I try to connect
to the internet, Windows 2000 immediately locks up and I have to
turn off the power to restart it.

I contacted Asus, I did everything they suggested, except try Windows XP.
If I was sure that would solve the problem, I would spend the $100 or so
to buy XP.

Windows 2000 Professional w/ service pack 4
ASUS P4P800-E DELUXE mainboard
P4 2.8EGHz
1GB Infineon Dual Channel
Enermax 420 watt psu
WD 80 GB hard drive
Nvdia Geforce4 MX440 video card

I don't think this is a motherboard issue but more of a Win2000 / modem driver issue or modem driver / third party software issue. What exactly were the two modems brands that you tried? Try removing any previous modem drivers if you haven't already done so.

The modems were Supra & Amigo, both v92 with Conexant chipsets.
They were both new, the installation CD's had Win2k drivers.

There were no other modems installed before I tried the Supra.
I formatted and reinstalled Windows before trying the next modem.

They both worked fine when I installed them on my Win98
computer to see if they worked.

I installed XP Pro, the serial modem works now, the system runs much better, 2-3C cooler too.

I e-mailed Asus about the modem problem, their solution was to use XP.

That is a great answer! That still does not answer the question why?
