Recycle bin will not emtpy

Trash won't empty after running uniblue Speed up my PC
It appears I tracked it down to Ad-Aware SE.
Years ago I proved one of their updates installed a hijacker.
They fixed it.
Now, it appears they are doing something again.
first sign: Trash won't empty, says can't delete wondows.
second sign: SSID is transmitted, even though it is disabled in the router.
Third sign: E-Mailer was found.
You can't fix it by uninstallig.
You can't even fix it by reinstalling a fresh system with a 'Quick Format"
The only way to get rid of it, is to Reformat your drive, with the long format, NOT QUICK!
Then reinstall everthing.
I have verified this on 4 computers, and process of elimination!
You can't fixit with securitytaskmanager1.6
At first I tracked it down to one of programs.
Audio Shell
Spybot
Ad-AwareSE
100% sure one of thoses three, 98% sure, it is Ad-AwareSE
I would love verification of this.

Re: Trash wont empty XP

Hi and welcome to TSF.
I think it highly unlikely that AdAware is the cause of your problem. I and many of the TSF staff use AdAware on a regular basis and if there were a problem with it I think it would have affected us.

Re: Trash wont empty XP

I could be wrong, however the scenario I described, will bring the problem back every time, two Dells, a toshiba, and an MSI. All running XP.
Once the problem appears, only a full format, will get rid of it. Other sites I have read say they felt it was an interaction between Spybot and Ad-Aware SE.
I spent 4 days, around the clock, on 4 computers, to come up with a scenario that will reproduce it. Once I was down to the three programs , i just decided to not run any of three programs, and let someone pick up where I left off. However, years ago, when i proved Ad-Aware installed a browser hijacker, the came out with version 6.0 two weeks later.
And the hijacker never came back.
So, I have a bad taste in my mouth from Ad-Aware.
In time, I will prove which one.
Opps, did I say, the fast way to see the problem, is to run "Uniblue speed up my PC", then try to empty the trash. It won't let you, the mailer and SSID were very devious, and hidden very well.

Re: Trash wont empty XP

I'm not disputing what you say about them in the past but I think they learnt their lesson. Most of us run both SpyBot and AdAware as routine. BTW. I notice that you have posted this in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum but you haven't posted a log. I'm going to move the thread to General Security. Please follow these steps and post a DSS log in the HiJackThis Help forum. If you can't follow any of the steps please make a note of this in your reply. Please be patient as the analysts are very busy.

Recycle bin will not emtpy

In reference to the following thread
http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...ml#post1258179

I would normally buy that, however, A low level format, clean system, only drivers, and the above mentiond programs, and the problem appears, never connect to net, or other drives, I can reproduce this over and over again. It is one of those three programs. 100%
PS, see my started thread, i am new at this forum.
There is something installed by one of these three programs.
Ad-AwareSE
Spybot
or Audio Shell.
After running Uniblue's 'SpeedUpMyPC", try to empty the trash.
It won't the first time, second try, says it can't delete 'Windows".
Reboot, and you can empty.
Only way to make the problem go away, low level format, reinstall, don't install thoes above prgrams, I have been clean for two days, on 4 compters.
All back on the Net, and full E-Mail and browser.

Re: Recycle Bin Won't Empty

New news!
It is not AudioShell.
It is down to Ad-Aware SE
or Spybot.
I hate to go through this agony again.
but i am going to prove it, and use the Scientific method, ie:
Explain in detail how others can reproduce it.
And by the way, I have used those for years, always felt safe, now i have to questin again.
I am setting up a new computer.
Step by step, I will figure it out.
It just seems like I can't be the only person at this level?

Re: Recycle Bin Won't Empty

PS, trusted for years,
SINCE, I blew in Ad-Aware years ago, for one of their updates installing a browser Hijacker.
two weeks later, after I proved it on line, they came out with 6.0.
Problem was gone.
That's why I suspect Ad-Aware, but be assured, I will figure it out.
As before.

Re: Recycle Bin Won't Empty

Well,
I might have to eat a few of my initial words
1: I cannot isolate this problem to one single software package.
2: If I don’t install the following 4 programs:
2.1 Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06
2.2 spybotsd14
2.3 AudioShell135
2.4 spywareblastersetup351
Then all aforementioned problems don’t come back:
A: Recycle bin won’t empty, it say’s it can’t delete windows
B. Wireless router transmits SSID, even though it says it is disabled
C. Phantom E-Mail server is running
D. When I shut down, Explorer is “not responding”
3. It appears to be a combination of the programs, and updates.
4. I am through trying to figure it out. I wonder, if anybody out there can give me a “Non -Standard”, “Cop-out” answer?
5. Bottom line;
If I don’t install the above programs, the problems don’t come back.
I just will not run them anymore; until I get an answer that I can prove.
6. I now only run:
“AVG” free version for ant virus, (AWESOME!).
“Uniblue Power Suite” for registry cleaning and anti spy ware, (AWESOME!).
“Security Task Manager v1.6e”, the most intuitive, awesome thing I have EVER used! Gets rid of multiple instance of browser running, (uncontrollable rapid fire pop ups), and always finds things Ad-Aware, and Spybot did not.
All problems gone, all is great.
I am done chasing this goose!
PS I was wrong, it is not worth chasing!

Re: Recycle bin will not emtpy

Well,
I have to eat my words.
I was wrong.
I coudn't let it go, I had to find it!
My apologies to Ad-Aware and Spybot.
I turned out to be AudioShell135 after all.
I had to do a matrix of the installation order to finally find it.
Fresh Low Level format, one application at a time.
AudioShell135, once installed, with JUST uniblue Power suite.
When you run "SpeedUp my PC", the trash wont empty until you reboot.
1: My apologies to Ad-Aware and Spybot.
2: Can somebody out there verify what I have learned.
This is an honorable site, I was wrong.

Re: Recycle bin will not emtpy

Wow,
Ad-Aware 2007?
LOL
It says it all!
Anyone that has followed this thread's history.
Years ago, I proved Ad-Aware, through one of it's updates, installed a browser hijacker.
Within weeks, they released 6.0.
Again, i point out a potential problem with Ad-Aware 6.0, and Again within weeks, they stop supporting updates.
HMMM?
Kinda makes ya wonder.
Ad-Aware 2007, tried it on three different machines, everyone a complete disaster! Crash, Crash, Crash!
It will be very interesting, to observe if my problems come back, now that Ad-Aware is no longer anything I will ever consider installing again.

Re: Recycle bin will not emtpy

I really can't believe AdAware is the problem as I use it on a regular (at least once a week) basis and AdWatch is on all the time. I'll await your observations with interest.

Re: Recycle bin will not emtpy

Update:
1: SpyBot 1.5.2:
Hats off!
Why:?
Because they did not add tons of overhead.
Because they left it "Familiar".
Because it works.
I donate, please, anybody that uses this program, donate!
2: AdAware:
Since I have removed all instances of AdAware from my systems, network, computers,
I have had NO problems.
All other programs questioned, are installed, running, and all is good.
Enough said.
3: SpyWareBlaster:
Not sure.
It appears to impair my systems,
However, It may be a conflict.
I have chosen not to run it anymore.
4: Uniblue SpyEraser:
Hats off!
This finds things nothing else has.
Some harmless, however, at least I get to choose.
5: Uniblue RegestryBooster 2:
Hats off. GREAT product!
6: Unibluue SpeedUpMy PC:
Not Good. See above problems.
7: Security Task Manager 1.6e
INCREDABLE!!!!!!!!
Ever try to uninstall MacAfee?, Norton?, Trend Micro?.
Ever try to eliminate factory installed background junk?
This works! It works! It is absolutely the best, and most powerful,
user friendly system utility I have EVER come across!
8: AVG 7.5
Hats off!
Donate.

Re: Recycle bin will not emtpy

I have a very similar problem.

Windows XP Professional with SP2. On a clean install the recycle bin works fine. After installing a few programs the recycle bin "breaks". By this you can delete files and they go to the recycle bin (and you see the recycle bin full icon) but if you double click the recycle bin no files are shown and when this happens sometimes the "Recycle Bin Tasks" drop down menu disappears as well. Dropping to a DOS prompt and changing to the directory and then issuing a dir/a shows the file in the recycle bin:
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-583907252-1563985344-725345543-1003>dir /A
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 007D-2499

Directory of C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-583907252-1563985344-725345543-1003

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-583907252-1563985344-725345543-1003>

Also what I have noticed is that soon after the file will be deleted by itself. Something is automatically emptying the recycle bin as next dir I do a dir /a the file is missing:
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-583907252-1563985344-725345543-1003>dir /A
Volume in drive C has no label.

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-583907252-1563985344-725345543-1003>

(Right now the "Recycle Bin Tasks" drop down menu has disappeared from the recycle bin)

I currently have the following protection software installed:
Ad-Aware 2007
AVG Free Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Belarc Advisor 7.2
HijackThis 1.99.1
MailWasherPro
PC Pitstop Optimize 1.5
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
SpywareBlaster 4.0
SurfSecret REGISTERED v3.00
Sygate Personal Firewall
Trend Micro Anti-Spyware
Unlocker 1.8.6
Windows Installer Clean Up

I've tried all the registry fixes and patches on the net as well as dropping to a command prompt in safe mode and deleting the RECYCLER directory(and all subdirectories and files) but to no avail as the problem still persists.

Unlike removed20608a I am not using or have installed:
securitytaskmanager1.6
Audio Shell

Can't find much on google in regards to this problem. Has this problem before, formatted and clean installed. Recycle bin was fixed. After installing a few apps, it broke :(

Re: Recycle bin will not emtpy

Writing the above post actually helped me solve the problem(listing all the security/protection programs I had installed). The culprit turned out to be:
SurfSecret REGISTERED v3.00

In its "General" tab in the "Windows" box section "Empty Recycle Bin" was ticked(SurfSecret was set to run every 5 minutes which explained why the recycle bin would be working for a short time and then stop working and then later begin working again).
