Ethernet connection problem

I'm having a problem getting a connection to the internet through the ethernet. I have a HP Omnibook with Windows 2000 Pro. My dial -up works fine. I've tried the wizard to get connected. I shows that I have a connection to the internet, but I make it work. This computer was a network computer if that tells you anything. Can someone walk me through the steps required to make my ethernet connection work. Thanks! Kerwin

Are you using a dial up connection, or a dsl/cable connection. If your
using dialup the ethernet will not work, you have to use your dial
up modem.

I am trying to make it connect over a cable modem. I see in the LAN that I have established a connection, but I cannot log on to any website through Explorer. It appears I need to give it more information, but I do not know what or where.

You should go to or find create a new connection. Follow the prompts
and you should be set. You may have to remove the old connection.
Go into device manager and make sure there are no flags red or yellow.
Go to control panel to find network and dialup connections to create
a new connection. Im hazy with 2000 as I dont use it every day.

I've tried to establish a new connection, and remove an old connection. How did I get into the device manager and what are these flags I'm looking for? In the LAN it shows I have a connection but can't log in to the internet. Thanks

Go to control panel find the system folder click the hardware tab,
then devices, look for any yellow or red flags around your ethernet.
It may be disabled, check properties. If the ethernet is onboard
make sure that it is enabled in bios.

I got as far as the hardware tab, but under the hardware tab I have 3 sections - Hardware wizard- Device manager - Hardware profiles. Which one do I need and then what shopuld I do and look for? Thanks.

I'm in Device manager. What do I click on to see if there are any flags? I have everything from - disk drives, DVD drive, keyboards, Modems, ports, etc., etc.

I got into network adapters and then clicked on 3Com Etherlink III. Its says in "device status" this device is working properly. Should I click on of the other tabs - advanced- driver -resources?

No just wanted to make sure that the ethernet was there and enabled.
You did find the make new connection as I previously posted? It walks
you through setting up the lan, by default it will be set to dial up.

I set up to lan. and the computer shows that I'm connected at 10 bdhs, but when I click on the internet explorer icon, it says page can not be found. Any Ideas?

In the bottom right hand corner of your screen is there a little icon
there that shows your connected? Should be but not always, if so
right click on it and go to properties, should bring up a window local
area connection properties, you should have tcp ip in that window.
Sorry Im not more fluid in how to get to or describe things, about
a million different things to remember and it gets confusing trying to
explain via a keyboard.
Go to control panel, network connections Click on tcp/ip and click on properties make sure obtain a ip address and DNS server address automatically and you should be connected to the internet. I grabbed
this from another site.

Tried what you said in the first place; in the LAN connection under the General tab, highlighted TCP/IP, clicked on properties, checked the obtain IP address automatically. It shows the ethernet status as enabled and the window says connected. When you launch Explorer, it always gives a "server not detected/page won't load" error message. Explorer is not "seeing" the connection. The computer itself knows that it is hooked up to the ethernet, but somehow, it needs to communicate this to Explorer to see the TCP/IP address. Explorer thinks there is no connection.

Maybe your nic card has a problem. Try removing it, or uninstalling from
device manager, reboot and reinstall drivers.

Trying the figure this ethernet thing out, now I somehow mess up my dial up connection. I must of checked something I shouldn't have. I tried to a new connection but I run into a road block because it's not letting me plug in a phone number of my choice. It's putting in a 800 phone number automatically that doesn't work.

Also, how do I retrieve a password that I forgot from one of my old dial -up connections. Thanks
