Cry inaccesible boot device

Here is the scenario:
Several machines over the course of six months getting error "inaccesible boot device"

The machines are varied: DELL, IBM, desktops, notebooks
Mostly Windows 2K but some XP
Sometimes taking the hd out and putting it back in solves the issue
In most cases but not all Chkdsk /f seems to solve most problems

What general thing could be causing this same error in so many machines?

Re: inaccesible boot device

Are they in the same location?

Reason I ask, a while ago I built a system which worked fine for a few months, then I moved and started having problems with 'lost' drives all time, innaccesable drives and similar faults. Had a hard time tracking it down, tried different drives, vid cards, ram, PSU etc, but no good. It turned out to be something in the household power supply. Picked up a decent UPS, and haven't had any issues at all.

Since then I've kept track of strange 'glitches' in the house, and found some devices realy benefit from being plugged into a UPS, TV, stereo, alarm clock etc.

Ken.

Re: inaccesible boot device

Unfortunately, yes, they are in different locations. Most are plugged into UPS's, some are not. The thing that gets me about this is chkdsk /f fixes 99 percent of them
