BSOD crash as connection is made to ISP / Internet

Hello,

I have a DELL Latitude CPx500GT operating Windows 2000 Professional, Service Pack4, with 261,532KB of RAM.

This unit has worked faultlessly until last week when a serious problem arose. The laptop still works as normal, but when I dial up my ISP the machine crashes with a Blue Screen,
***STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
After this stop message the laptop is jammed and nothing works, the only way to switch off is to remove the battery. Needless to say I have been unable to connect to the internet with the Latitude, and have had to resort to hunting out an old PC using Windows 95, which I am (very slowly) sending this post on.

The strange thing is, after the crash, the Latitude is still making the computer squeaks, which can be heard on the phone line, only stopping after the modem is disconected.

I am sending this with the same modem installed in the old laptop, to prove it works. I have tried using different ISPs (I subscribe to three), and a different modem (and in a different slot), but it always crashes at the same point.
It dials in perfectly, on-screen message says "Verifying name and password", then "Registering your computer on the network" then changes to "Authenticated", at this exact moment it changes to the Blue Screen crash.

I have uninstalled the Firewall but it makes no difference.

I have run a Symantec virus check, which found nothing.

I have not installed any new hardware recently.

The Latitude will start up again and work as normal, until the internet is once more attempted, and the crash happens again.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Re: BSOD crash as connection is made to ISP / Internet

Update:
Maybe a small point, but I've just noticed the Dell model code has an H in it - Latitude CPxH500GT
Sorry.
