Internet access after reload

IBM laptop recovered after crash. Win 2000 pro with IE. When accessing internet, IE first says "Finding site" (yahoo.com), then says "site found, waiting for reply". After a wait the "page cannot be displayed" message appears and IE search says "Done". DHCP has assigned IP, network is shown, and the internet firewall (DSL modem) can be pinged from the laptop. Seems to me it should work. How can I fix this?
Thanks, Mel

Could be a DNS-related problem, can you ping for instance "www.microsoft.com" (without the quotes).

The assigned IP-address is in the range the DHCP from the router should assign addresses in?

Is the "Default Gateway" address the same as the IP from the router?
