w2k pro not installing well...

http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/laptop-support/159062-w2k-clean-install-toughbook.html#post923051

See the above post in the laptop forum for more info and previously tried remedies.

The basic question that I have is why is it taking so long for w2k pro to install? I have so far spent 72 hours trying to install, without installation runtime interruption mind you, w2k on this laptop. It is going super slow. When I booted with the CD, all of the text portion of the setup went really well, only took about 15 minutes to go thru. The first time it boots into windows, when the setup goes into the installing devices mode, this is when time starts to pile up. Now, it is at the finalizing installation screen, and has been there working for about 30 hours now.

Anybody have a clue as to what is going on?

Re: w2k pro not installing well...

After about 96 hours of installing, win 2k pro is now installed. Unfortunately, it won't boot, into any mode at all. It gets to the windows is starting up screen, and slows badly. I let it set for about 12 hours and the progress bar goes about half way across, but stops, and the blue bar directly above it keeps moving. Any ideas on this?

Re: w2k pro not installing well...

i'd wipe the HD using boot n nuke to erase all data on it.
make sure the win2k disc you are using is not faulty. has it installed win2k successfully before? it is possible that the CD-drive is faulty as well. you said that the floppy drive no longer works, what happened to that?

Re: w2k pro not installing well...

I am pretty sure that the CD is not faulty, as it re-installed win2k on my PC about a month ago. The CD drive could be at fault, but there has never been a problem with it, so I've ruled that out. As far as the floppy is concerned, somebody apparently tried to force feed a floppy into the drive before I got it, and screwed it up. Do you really think that it could be previously installed software still somewhere on the HDD that could be affecting the install negatively? I have wiped the HDD (using the win CD), reformatting it to NTFS and figured that would do the trick, but it may not have. Oh well, I'll give boot n nuke a try...

...let ya know later.
