System application error, svchost.exe error and
Recently my computer started acting up when restarting and after shutdown. I get error messages like svchost.exe and webcomp.exe. Also getting a Dr Watson Non Fatal Error, Windows 2000 returned error code=80 The file exists. I recently transferred data only from this computer to my new laptop, but now it does not load properly. Help, please? anyone?

Re: System application error, svchost.exe error and
Hello dcat222, Welcome to TSF!
Webcomp.exe is related to the application installed by Mobipocket Reader to create readable documents from RSS or eNews feeds on the web. The message you are getting relating to the code = 80 just means that Dr Watson cannot write a error log file. Can you access or post any related Dr Watson log? That would help. Actually to be honest, I am suspicious about any svchost errors. They usually deal with .dll file corruption or infection (ie virus - maybe a blaster worm). I am not trained in this, so I think the first course of action is to go to the Hijack This forum (on TSF) and read this first http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html and then post a log accordingly. If you are still experiencing a problem, repost and we can be sure that we are dealing with an otherwise uninfected machine. Alternatively we could just be spinning our wheels so to speak. good luck

Re: System application error, svchost.exe error and
That is fine. A virus scan, even the better ones don't always pick up everything. IMHO you should still go to the HJT forum and check there. They use much more sophisticated log techniques and intrusive applications that get right into the operations happening within the machine to make sure it is clean. The preparation takes an hour or so, but worth it to know you are clean. Then we can look at repairing your files.
Take my advice or not, its your choice, someone else may come up with a better solution that is true, however with the svchost errors, you may have issues with security.

Re: System application error, svchost.exe error and
I am currently going through your first suggestion. However, when I go into the Control Panel, and click on Add/Remove Programs, nothing comes up. The Add/Remove Hardware program does come up. I have no access to the internet on that computer...Thank you so much for helping me, I really do appreciate it.

Re: System application error, svchost.exe error and
It sounds like you have some serious system file corruptions. I would back up any critical data immediately to a cd or removable device. Forget removing applications now dcat222, just back up and go straight to the HJT forum and begin the process of preparing your log. Download all programmes require from the networked machine and run them on the machine with an issue. Some of the steps will require networking, however if you cannot connect at all (on the troublesome machine) make sure you let the security specialist know what you couldn't achieve when you post it.
The more information you can give to them the better and faster you will get results. I suggest not doing anything else (except backing up and following the HJT instructions) as this can inadvertantly make things worse.
