Inaccessible Boot Device - No HDD seen on recovery
I just had a power interuption on my system and got this error on
restart. I have tried to go into system recovery with my Win 2k CD, but when I go to repair it says there is no HDD. I can see my HDD listed when I startup the PC, I have opened the case and tightened all the conncetions, and have gone into the BIOS and loaded all the default settings. How can I go from here to fix it? Is my hard drive toast? |

Re: Inaccessible Boot Device - No HDD seen on recovery
I ran a full scan with the Western Digital diagnostic tool and it didn't find any errors, but I still get a no HDD message when trying to repair from the Win2k disk. Any more ideas?

Hi,
Do you also have an IDE Hard drive on that computer? Have you made sure that you have the Hard Drive Priority set correctly in the Bios Setup Menu? You need to also check the Boot Order to make sure it is proper.

Re: Inaccessible Boot Device - No HDD seen on recovery
No it only has 1 drive.
I edited boot order to allow the CD drive, it is now: Floppy CD Drive VIA VT6420 1st HDD (Should this be showing my actual HD?) The only BIOS settings I see that might be related are: Under advanced OnChip SATA BOOTROM (enabled) My Boot Settings Quick Boot (enabled) Full Screen Logo (enabled) AddON ROM Display Mode (Force BIOS) Bootup Num Lock (on) PS/2 Mouse Support (auto) Wait for F1 if error (enabled) Hit 'Del' Message display (enabled) Interrupt 19 capture (disabled) |

Re: Inaccessible Boot Device - No HDD seen on recovery
Hi,
What motherboard are we dealing with? Also, when there is a power interruption (computer shut down without a proper shut down), some times a simple CMOS clearing with solve that problem. Might be worth a try, because something in there might be corrupted and it won't harm anythng. In the bios setup menu, do you have Sata enabled? There should be a couple of options in there that need to be enabled. When we know the board, that might help us to know. I would set the boot order to: CDRom - 1st Floppy - 2nd Hard Drive - 3rd...boot order

Re: Inaccessible Boot Device - No HDD seen on recovery
Hi,
Did you follow dai's instructions or doesn't it show anyplace? Another consideration, when you go into the BIOS setup menu, is the drive listed in there? Is it set to Auto?

Re: Inaccessible Boot Device - No HDD seen on recovery
I ran the HD diagnostic and nothing showed up. In the BIOS Setup I don't see anything about this hard drive and no SATA setting other than
SATA BOOTROM (enabled) |

Re: Inaccessible Boot Device - No HDD seen on recovery
Hi,
Strange that it does not even show up. Do a double check, because Sata drives are notorious for having the power cable and the data cable be very loose fitting on the drive. In fact, on many I have to use cable ties to keep them on the drives. Make sure that they are not loose on the drive. If it doesn't show up, it almost sounds like the cable and drive are not making a good connection. Do you have another cable to try?
