Windows 2000 internet problem
Hi I'm a new member.I'm Murray from St.Catharines Ontario Canada and like most here I suppose have a problem. My sister received a used older computer running windows 2000 with NT and I've been trying to get her on the internet. The problem being, the computer was used in a hospital network setting and every time I try and access a website I get a message saying I need a supervisors password which I have not a clue what it is.She has a high speed modem and my question is how do I remove the security settings that require passwords so my sister can use this computer? The tech support for the server said that we are connected but seemed to think the antivirus and firewall were the problem, however I think this computer was just not allowed access to the internet without authorization, and I would like to know how to remove this portion of the OS.This OS probably isn't the best one for her needs and I do not have the disc.Any help would be greatly appreciated,Thanks Murray

Re: Windows 2000 internet problem
If you have the install CD, and nothing to important is on yet; do a Fix or whatever they like to call it. Just put the CD in then restart, when it asks about fresh installs just hit whichever says "Fix or Restore Microsoft Windows 2000 installation.

Re: Windows 2000 internet problem
Hard to say what the prob is without seeing it. You can't log in as adminstrator?
If she's got high speed internet, one option might be to bring another PC over and download a modern, user-friendly Linux OS like PCLinuxOS or SimplyMepis. Burn the .iso download to a bootable CD. With high-speed internet Linux can be a real joy to use. Of course, there would be a learning curve. If your printer can communicate with the Linux distro (might want to tell us what kind of printer she's got) the transfer could be painless. However, I think Windows 2000 is a great OS, maybe the best one Windows ever released. Does the PC have a genuine Windows sticker on it? You know, the shiny metallic looking one with the 25 character key-code? If so, you could borrow anyone's genuine Windows 2000 CD, reinstall the OS, type in your valid keycode at the right place, then go online and download several years worth of updates. That's not illegal as long as you have a valid keycode. |
