2k Pro won't start after install

Recently my 7 year old HDD decided to fail, so I had to replace it. After installing windows 2000 Pro it refuses to load. This is the message I get:

Windows 2000 could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

This screen comes up before I can even get to one of the loading bars.

Here are my system specs if it helps:

160GB maxtor HDD(I made a smaller partition so that windows 2000 will recognize it)
768 MB of memory
900MHz AMD Duron Processor
ATI Radeon 9000 128MB VRam

Did you try re-installing? I had a problem like that once, only with Linux.
