Win 2000 Pro not completing loading

I've had Win 2000 Pro on my PC for a few years with no problems but when I turned it on a couple of days ago it got past the login screen and then nothing further seemed to happen, just the normal background colour before it loads the icons.

I was able to boot using a Win 98 disk and can see the files on the hard-disk. I tried the Win 2000 disk and tried the repair option. It completed and started to reboot. The same thing seemed to happen but when I left it for a while (out of frustration) It came up with a Windows Installer box with the following inside:

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD_ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'Nero - Burning Rom' disk and click OK.

At the bottom of the box is a dropdown that says "Use feature from" and the only option within the dropdown is "Please insert the disk with Nero - Burning Rom"

I tried putting the Nero CD in and selecting the nero directory from the C drive (it let me find it on browse) but no success.

Can someone please suggest what I can do.

Thanks in advance.

James

My System

Download the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility and install it.

Next, cancel the Nero dialog box.

Uninstall Nero through Add/Remove programs.

Install the MSICUU and run it. Look for Nero entries and remove them.

Reboot, the error should be gone. If so, do a clean install of Nero.

The problem is that it doesn't get through the full login to allow me to do anything.

It goes through to the login to Windows where you put the Username and Password and click OK. Then it shows "loading your personal settings" and "Applying your personal settings" but then it just stays as the background screen colour and doesn't show any icons or status/toolbar at the bottom.

Is it possible to make a "boot disk" CD with the program you suggested on it?

As I mentioned I was able to use an old Win98 start-up disk that I had lying around to get into the C-drive and see all the files. Also when I booted up tonight it went through a disk-check and that went through OK.

I'm having to use a friends computer for this so may be a bit delayed sometimes but really appreciate your assistance.

Thank you for your time.
