Deleting second Os
So i was attempting to upgrade my Windows 2000 Pro to windows xp and realized it wasn't upgrading, but installing it onto another partition and making a secondary Os. I stopped it halfway thru but now when i boot, it goes to the OS choice screen then always selects windows xp, and then hangs up cause the installation wasn't complete. How can i delete this second Os or at least make my windows 2000 the primary one it selects? I am running an old school Compaq Presario desktop with a 1gig Amd processor, unknown model, and 512 mb ram.

You can format the partition you started the XP install on by booting into Windows 2000 pro right clicking the partition you created in my computer and formatting it. Of course, this is assuming you didn't have any data saved on that partition that you need before installing XP on that partition. If that's the case, then just back up the necessary data from the XP partition then format it.
After doing that, still booted into windows 2000, you can edit the boot.ini file. It's a hidden + system file so you'll have to open "my computer" and then click "tools" then "folder options". Next, click the "view" tab and UNcheck "hide protected operating system files (recommended)" and put the bullet next to "show hidden files and folders". If you don't know how to edit the boot.ini file you can open it in notepad and copy/paste it's contents to a reply post here and either I or someone else will tell you what needs to be added/removed. I just deleated a second w2K pro os from my desktop. Had trouble with finding the boot.ini file so after I followed the instructions on how to open hidden files I ran a simple search by typing in "boot.ini" & the search found it. I clicked on it,opened it & copied a back up both to my doctuments file & a floppy. I then deleted the predetermined os & walla it worked.
Thanks to everyone for the assistance. tgood ![]() ![]()
