How do I creat CD-ROM boot Disk for DOS
Hello, I have a Promise Ultra ATA Controller that needs a BIOS update so Win 2000 w/SP4 can see the full capacity of my 320 GB HDD.
The problem is to update the BIOS I need to make a floppy DOS boot disk. My floppy drive does not work and was wondering if anyone has any idea how to create a DOS boot Disk CD-ROM? Here are the instruction to update the BIOS from the website: BIOS Upgrade The following instructions detail the steps that need to be taken in order to upgrade the BIOS of your Ultra TX controller card. BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) controls the booting operation of the Ultra TX. If you receive information regarding an update for the Ultra TX BIOS (from the Promise Technology website or technical support), download the update and then follow these instructions to install the update. NOTE: Before updating the Ultra TX BIOS, you can save the old BIOS by choosing option 1 in the main menu ("Backup Current ROM BIOS to File"). Type the path and file name where you wish to save the old BIOS (i.e., "A:\OLDBIOS.BIN"). 1. Create a bootable DOS floppy, and copy the file "PTIFLASH.EXE" and the file containing the updated BIOS to the floppy diskette. 2. The file "PTIFLASH.EXE" is a DOS program; a DOS boot floppy diskette must be used to run the program. 3. At the "A:\>" prompt, type "PTIFLASH." The main menu should be generated. 4. In the main menu, choose option 2 - "Update BIOS From File." In the pop-up dialog box that appears, enter the path and name of the BIOS file you wish to update to (i.e., "A:\ULBIOS.BIN"). NOTE: If, after typing in the path and file name while trying to update the BIOS, you receive the message "This file is not found," make sure you’ve entered the correct path and file name. 1. The utility will then update the Ultra TX BIOS, and an "Update Success" message will appear. 2. Restart the system. NOTE: When the Ultra TX BIOS appears, make sure that the BIOS version is the new version. Thank you for your time. |

Okay, you'll need two blank CDs available. 1 is going to be your bootdisk, the other will contain the files for the firmware upgrade.
First, download a windows 98se bootable iso image (can find one here: http://www.allbootdisks.com/index.ph...filecatid=1869) Next, open your favorite burning program and then open the 98se .iso file into the program. Burn the .ISO file making sure that you tell your burning software to "finalize cd", meaning no multisession, else the cd will not be made bootable. Now, open your favorite burning progam again and add the files that are needed to update your firmware (ptiflash.exe and the updated BIOS file *.bin) and burn the cd. After the 2 cds are completed burning, put the cd back in the drive that you burned the iso image to, reboot the computer booting from that cd-rom. When it asks if you want to start PC with cdrom support choose yes so your cdrom drive gets a drive letter. You might get a warning about C: drive not being a valid fat partition, don't worry about that. Once you see the A: prompt, look right above that, section that says "Mscdex version..." About 2 sections down it'll tell you what your cdrom drive letter is. Put in the cd that has the bios upgrade files and now follow your posted directions on how to update your BIOS substituting A: for your cdrom drive letter. You can change the A: prompt to your cdrom drive letter just by typping the drive letter (example "D:" ..no quotes)and pressing enter. If this seems like a lot I'd be willing to create an .iso file for you that includes the necessary files for you so you only need 1 cd. Partie Edit: sorry, didn't realize 'til now that this post is about a week old ![]() Last edited by PartieHonteuse : 02-27-2007 at 10:10 PM. |
