Can't get online at all
I just upgraded to Windows 2000 Pro last night and after the install I can't seem to surf at all. Did the upgrade somehow change my networking options ? What's the first thing I should be doing ? Please provide any links or options.
I'm running a P2 350 MHZ computer and are using Bell Sympatico High Speed. Should I be contacting their tech support and see if they can get me online ? I was hoping you fellas who help me out first. |

I do have a router but it is not being used right now. My Speedstream 5200 modem is connected directly to my PC.
I didn't have this problem when I was using Windows 98 SE. I was on the phone last night with Bell's tech support for almost an hour and a half. After the gentleman tried everything (manually obtaing IP addresses, subnet mask etc) he says that my connection is fine on his end. He told me that my problem is definitely a software issue. I have no idea what to do. I even called up a good friend of mine who knows alot about computers and still no luck getting online. I have no idea if my drivers are updated or not. All I know is that everything was hunky dory until I upgraded to Windows 2K. Now all of a sudden it seems like the upgrade changed everything around and I have no clue what to do next. Should I be contacting Microsoft via email ? Do they still offer support for this OS ? If I need to download any drivers or programs, PLEASE let me know because I'm only able to connect online at work right now. Any suggestions ? Should I just reformat and start clean ? I don't really have anything on my PC that's important...plus I have most of my programs backed up on CD. Please help.

Jiggy -
Is your Ethernet an add-on card or is it on the motherboard? If it's an add-on card, get the W2K drivers for it. If the networking chip is on the motherboard, find out the exact motherboard, go to their website, and get the LAN drivers. While you're at it, get the chipset, video, and sound drivers too. Once you've downloaded them, read the "readme" files to figure out how to install or look on the website for directions. Also, upgrading from W98 to W2K isn't all that great an idea. Much better to clean install. W98 is based on the FAT file system, whereas W2K is NTFS. EDIT: I think W2K is the best OS from MS. I've been using it for years with zero problems.
