Win 2000 user logon never completes

I recently upgraded from Win ME to 2000. When entering user name and password, they are accepted. The loading settings message is displayed, the wall paper paints and then the logon box returns. This happens for a user and administrator account.

I booted from a Win 98 boot floppy and deleted the SAM file and when logging on with the administrator account and no password, same results.

I can implode and start over but would rather not. Any help is appreciated!

I don't know if deleting the SAM was a good idea, but go back to dos and try deleting the *.pwl files in the windows directory.

You may have to start the install over.

You can try to look for a nt password reset utility on the internet, but I believe it requires the existing files to be there to edit.
