windows 2000 pro network help

i recentyl bought a dell latitude in a garage sale for a dam good price. but when i go to hook it up to my internet it does hook up it sends packets but not recive, i have tryied to hook it up to my road runner modem and then to my router but no luck. i have tc-ip,qos packt,cleint for micro network,file and printer sharing. some help would be nice.

I cannot able to access the system from a domain model and the system which is belongs to a workgroup model. I am getting the error message.

you might not have permission to use this network resources. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.
