Hello.
This problem is kind of hard to explain. but i recently upgraded my only server from a NT4 Server to a Windows 2000 Server. I run a small network so i decided to NOT use Active directory at the moment, i want to learn more about it before i fully implement it and start using it. I installed the server and made it a domaincontroller, and everything seemed to work out just fine. The problem occured when i installed windows XP on the clientside (we had NT4 before and worked out fine with the win 2000 server) My printers and networkshares stops responing randomly, i have very long logintimes (2-3 min). i started to investigate and found some people on the net with similar problems. The computer logs say it cant contact the Active directory. but i _dont_ use it and hasnt configured it so thats not so strange if it doesnt work. i understood the problem was something different and now i think i have the answer. *tadaa* I dont have a local DNS configured to function as a locator for my local network!, and because DNS is the backbone of AD the errorlogs keeps blame AD. Obviously windows XP doesnt use WINS or Netbios to locate resources on the local network. Can anyone confirm my conclusion, and give some advices. before i start configuring DNS and wasting my weekend. Sincerly Erdna Last edited by erdna; 08-12-2004 at 06:51 AM. |
