W2000....Full version, or fake?
I have a brand new Windows 2000 CD-rom that is "For distribution with a new COMPAQ PC only". The Disk is NOT hologram...it has zero's and one's on the side...and reads "Compaq CD for Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Operation System .....Only for use with Compaq Restore CD".
I also have the Restore CD that reads "For select models of Compaq Deskpro, Workstations, and Ipaq Computes.......Requires Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional CD. My question is...Is this disk the full version of Win2000? Would I be able to install it on a HD that is in a Compaq Computer? (a factory Pentium 4, winXP)? Does the HD have to be from a Compaq and can it already have Win98 on it? Let me know WHAT YOU THINK!

You have an OEM disk. It's for a new installation only, and can not be used to upgrade a W98 system. Some OEM disks only install on the specific machine type they were shipped with, some will install on any machine.

All OEM versions are only for a new system, and will not perform an upgrade install. They will do a repair install of the same version of Windows...

you could just put in the OEM disk, boot from cd-rom. and select a clean install...it will erase everything on your hard drive and let you start over clean

Okay...this may sound dumb (& it probably is) but....
How do you formate the hard drive? What if the computer is in perfect working order? How do you formate a HD that is a little messed up and NEEDs an operating system? |

I can't boot off my Windows 2000 CD and have to use the start up disks. If you haven't done so yet, suggest you make these 4 disks. You'll need 4 formatted floppys. Insert the CD, open your CD drive. THey'll be a folder near the not called something Bootable Disk, open this folder and click on make bootable disk.

Yes, I have made the 4 win2000 floppy disks. Do you have the same kind of Win2000 CD that I described??
I've tryed using them, though I'm not sure what I'm doing. What did you do? ---------------- ~Also, I formatted an old HD (10GB). Anyway, I used it on a newer compaq computer, I put the win2000 CD before I started it. It said: SYSTEM RECOVERY Cannot create user partition! Systerm Recovery cannot contiune! OK |

W200 - Virgo - Did you get it to work?
Virgo, I purchased a similar Compaq W2K disk as you have (with 1's and 0's on it and similar notes). Did you ever get yours to work?
I was able to create and boot off the 4 floppy disks. But, my laptop permits either a floppy drive or a cd drive, not both. So, I could not try to complete the installation. Were you able to? Did the cd work when booting off the 4 floppies? On the the cd in the root directory is a file called setup.exe.cex. Barry |

Barry
No Barry, so far I have not had any success, although I have not tryed that hard...I don't think these 4 "Windows 2000 Setup" disks are what we need. These 4 disks seem to be for repairing an already installed W2k. What we need is a "start up" disk.... maybe we can't make one from this CD, I don't know.
Well, I'm going to try agian, and I'll let you know of my progress
