hello. well for a few days i have not been able to access mail.yahoo.com which was my homepage. since then, pages i have frequently visited started to not work either such as google and yahoo as well as gmail. since i needed a search engine, i tried altavista and it worked for a day and now that site doesnt work either. i attached a pic of the page that shows up when i try to visit those sites.



i asked a friend and he said something about host files but i dont really know much about it. i checked my host file and according to a website i found, it seemed perfect with the only line being "127.0.0.1 localhost". i ran spybot and adaware and this is still happening. heres my hijackthis log:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Try to upgrade Internet Explorer to version 6.0 and get the updates for it. Version 5.0 is outdated.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Make sure to close any open browsers you have. Check and fix the following in HijackThis (make sure not to miss any):

This might be a virus. You will need to run an online scan to make sure.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Please download Adaware and install it. Make sure to update it when you run it. Also make sure to customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or RAV Antivirus. Select the Autoclean option if you use TrendMicro. After that’s done, restart and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it’s clean.

Additionally, Microsoft has made some poor choices about default settings in the OSs, resulting in multiple security weaknesses. Gibson Research has a number of little programs that will help you close security holes without having to edit your registry, wander My Computer, etc., just to get secure. I highly recommend this resource.

The secret to running these programs is to update at least weekly! Update Adaware and Spybot before you run a scan every time. Don’t forget to update Blaster and Guard when you are doing your maintenance. Make sure the antivirus software us up-to-date. Put a note on your computer reminding you to do it!
