Help, I lost my background and it won't come back!

My desktop background mysteriously disappeared. When I right-click the desktop and select properties, background, it's still there. I try selecting other backgrounds and they show in the thumbnail, but when I click OK and go back to my desktop, it's not there. Just a blue screen with the icons.
Another strange thing is, when I try to change the color of the desktop, it only changes the background color of the icon labels!
I downloaded an updated video driver and ran a virus scan. Still no luck.

Download and run Spybot S&D.

I downloaded and installed Spybot, but my background still doesn't show up.

Try right clicking the desktop and turning off active desktop.
