Keyboard and mouse R both dead
I have taken on my brother's computer which didn't startup. Kept going up and down the whole time. OS is W2000 and it's a dinosaur, running on a P2 450MHz.
Suspecting virus, I took out the HD and ran it in my own computer. Sure enough there was a trojan, a worm and a suspect file on it. So I only saved the MP3's and JPG's that he wanted to keep and formatted the drive (FAT32 from my XP He). Then I put it back in his machine again. I'm now trying to load a new OS on it, but both the keyboard and the mouse seems to be dead, which makes it a bit hard to respond to the questions that pop up Both keyboard and mouse is working on a W98SE-machine that I have also, so they ought to be OK. I think the computer has been on during a power surge, but I was kind of hoping that I could get it running again. Any suggestions what to do ? Throw it on the scrapheap ? Rgds trollet |

The PS/2 ports have a small fuse that is normally soldered on the MB. If both devices stopped working, my guess is the fuse has been zapped.

they got a fuse for that?!, wow... only fuses on the motherboard i remember replacing was for a microchannel floppy that kept blowing due to people plugging the cable in upside down (dontcha love piping power via data cables, really tests that idiotproofing)... otherwise i would have to replace the PS/2 ports, course they might not work if the keyboard and mouse are in the wrong ports, but they are normally color coded and/or labelled to help people out like that... is there a chance that these are USB, instead of PS/2, where you may need to enable USB legacy support in the bios (probably need to use a PS/2 keyboard to enter bios)...
what would cause the fuse to blow on a PS/2 port (if such as fuse is present), afterall, the power surge is normally coming from the power supply and/or modem, maybe NIC, but not from the keyboard and/or mouse... i remember causing some desktops to lockup by building up some static electricity and touching the keyboard, usually causing nothing more than a lockup or blue screen, but nowadays, they dont even do that anymore |

There are fuses for the PS/2 ports, as well as several for the USB ports. Many of them are surface mounted and pretty tiny, not exactly user-replaceable.

Well, I've looked for the fuse now, didn't find it, so either it's very tiny , or it's on the backside of the board. I haven't dismounted it. As a matter of fact, I didn't find any fuses at all......As to Doctor Beg's question. Yes, they´re PS/2's, and they work perfect in my W98SE as stated before, but thanks for the suggestion. I'm at a loss here anyway, I've never had this happening before. |

The fuse will look almost exactly like a surface mount capacitor or resistor, but it should be labeled. I just pulled out a DFI P4 motherboard, and it has four surface mount fuses labeled Lx for the PS/2 ports, others I've seen just have one for the power output pin. I'm not sure why all the fuses for this one, but they're there. The USB ports also have fuses, and I keep a couple of old motherboards around to replace the fuses on boards that come in with non-working USB ports.

There you go.....I didn't even know what to look for in the first place, no wonder I didn't find it.....
I was of course looking for a round, easy-to-replace-in-it's-holder fuse. Silly me....I'll give it another shot tonight. Thanks for the clarification.

Nothing is that simple anymore!
It's best to have a meter to test the fuses, obviously with the power off...

That's probably the best way.....
My eyesight is preventing me from reading the next to invisible text on the components on this board. I've spoken to my brother about where to go next, and he said not to bother any more, he's planning to buy another one anyway. The most important thing was to salvage the content of the drive, and that is done. Thanks for the help anyway. Who knows - I might be back with yet another problem.....;-)) |
