What was the error message?? Anything relating to not being able to upgrade to an older OS?
Have you tried backing up your personal files to disc(s) then formatting and installing W2k?

Hard to say without looking over your shoulder as the problem occurred...
XP is heavier than W2K, but not by enuf that you're going to see much improvement if you were able to go back. Your biggest single stumbling block isn't the CPU, it's RAM. I had the misfortune of trying to help a friend with 64MB of RAM & XP. It took ten minutes to display Control Panel. The thing was just unusable. I've got a PIII 450 MHz CPU running Ubuntu & W2K, and it's fairly snappy. I mean, the CPU goes to 100% utilization for almost everything, but it gets where it's going without undue hesitation. There's 700+ MB RAM under the hood. Can you do something about RAM? There are at least 2 things to consider - how many slots on the mobo, and how much mem does it support? It may only have 2 slots and might not support more than 512 or some other fairly low number. If so there's not much sense in buying old (and expensive!) RAM - better to save and start over... |
